rimfire ammo
« on: February 27, 2010, 05:07:17 AM »
Walmart has Federal long rifle "value packs", 36 gr Cu plated HP's, 550 bulk pkg.

$15.47 each. It's about a mile from my house.

I noticed Natchez and Midway offer this ammo (525 per box) for $25 a box, and Midway is backordered.
Hmmm. Natchez wants $15 to ship a few boxes.

This is  a quality bullet. I'm going to stock up on that, got one box today, and some more Federal Champion 115 gr FMJ at $9.47 a box, too.
These prices are way down. Hopefully soon the price will break everywhere.

Thats a good price for .22 . But I've never had much luck with Federal bulk boxes. LOTS of FTF's and light loads. Decent plinking ammo though!

Sportsmans Guide has 2500 rounds of Armscore 36gr for $120. Armscore is good ammo. It shoots the same POI as CCI Standard Velocity in quite a few of my rifles.
There was also another online retailer that had 5000 rounds of Armscore for $170. I can't remember who it was though.

If you can find it (everyone's out of stock), Wolf MT is a VERY good round. Cheap too!

I shoot Rem gold hp's and bought a couple of bricks when they were around $10.00 a brick of 550. These are the most accurate and consistent in my 10-22. The other ones that will shoot good is CCI mimi mags.

 Rem.Vantage/chopped and tuned by me.

I got some of those sheels too. Shoot real well and accurate out of my Marlin M60. We have 2 Wal-Marts and there for a while they had virtually no ammo. They were always sold out of rimfire. So one store got some in and I grabbed 4 boxes just like that! I don't remember what I paid exactly, but that amount sounds pretty close. That's the problem with buying ammo(and other stuff) online. Some retailers get you with S&H and then the good price isn't so good.

Dang "gun grabber paranoia" still keeps the shelves empty. I swear. :-(

It's true that the shelves seem to clear in a hurry. My neighbor and I have been monitoring closely at a WM "superstore" a mile from my home. Seems that they get two deliveries daily, morning and early evening, and that the merchandise is put on the shelves immediately. Last Saturday my neighbor found no 9 mm ammo on Saturday, but on Sunday at 8 AM it was there.

For some reason, WM prices are the lowest around, and the Federal "Champion" brand seems to be the new low price brand. For about the past month, we have seen Winchester "white box" pistol ammo in stock (sporadically) at $11.47 a box, and for just the past few weeks the Federal is $9.47 (box 50). They have had it in .40 much more so than 9 mm, it seems that the 9 clears off the shelf faster.

And I have seen quite a few bulk packs (Remington, Winchester, and Federal) of .22 ammo there. For most of the year you could buy 100 round boxes of CCI, but the bulk boxes were rarely seen. Maybe half the time, there would be little or no .22 there at all. I have little personal evaluation of these brands (my 10-22 seems to shoot OK with all of them) but from rimfirecentral and the reviews at Midway, the Federal gets good response. In the past two weeks, it has been there on the shelf (with a cheaper Remington box - about $12.50 per 500).

I think that it is notable to see more stock at Walmart, and to see lower pricing at the same time. This Federal pistol ammo price is better than any online pricing in the past year or so. Cheaper than even the gun show prices.

Check your local WM frequently, and if you can strike up a conversation with a clerk, get some info about when they stock it. It could be that the recent improvement in supply is local or regional, but I believe there is more stock moving through their distribution. It is without a doubt true that it still clears off their shelf in a hurry, but there are more opportunities in Dallas, within the past few weeks.

I've found a trick to getting ammo @ WM. Go to an urban or suburban store, where you won't have as many people who are into shooting (for fun anyway). In one such store I found all types of ammo for my picking. I snagged a few boxes of the .22 550 bulk pack, and I'm set for a while.
