I have some rifles scoped with 4x32 fixed scopes and they work well for me.  I use these rifles mostly for close in small game hunting, such as stalking rabbits in the thickets where the ranges are usually 10 yards or less, but I've also used them to take squirrels and rabbits at longer distances.  My Chinese "B" series rifles (side levers and under levers) are pretty much all sporting plain old 4x32 fixed scopes, I find they work very well on these shooters..  Sometimes it's nice to just "point and shoot" without having  to worry about setting the AO or having to dial up or dial down on the magnification...

I have a pretty darn good BSA 3-9x40 and i just dont get as clear a view as iget from my Ruger 4x32 and my two Gamos 4x32's. (I think the 4x32 is perfectlu adequet for shooting or hunting between 20-50 yards. The only thing i can really say i like about the BSA is that i can see the target better at 10-15 yards which is my normal target practice indoor setup and its not blurry like the 4x32 fixed.

I use a 4x32 on my marlin 60. .22. It's a cheap BSA but has a very nice clear view. I like the lower power for close in squirrels in the woods. I also killed a woodchuck on the run with it last summer. The first shot was a little off and he started hauling the mail to his hole.. I touched off 3 more shots,, and to my suprise hit him 3 more times. He never made it back to his hole...My single shot left handed bolt action .22 has a 3-9-32. I use this for sitting watching woodchuck holes from 50 or 60 yards. It's very accurate, and a good headshot always anchors the chucks where they stand. A 4x scope is a great all around choice in my opinion.  I always use 3 power on my variable scopes if shooting offhand, and the 4 is great for that too. 9x makes it seem like i'm moving all over the place. IMO a high powered scope is only useful if you have a decent rest. i think without one, it causes misses for me anyway.

Nothing wrong with you sticking with your 4X scope. The longest shot I ever made with an air rifle was with a 4X scope so they work fine for hunting. You will give up some fine accuracy with 4X when target shooting compared to higher magnification and fine crosshair scopes but don't let that bother you. Minor handicap for most situations.
