Drive by shooting
« on: March 02, 2010, 12:03:55 PM »
I did another drive by shooting today, but not the gang type, bad kind. I've learned to keep at least one of my air rifles in the truck, because you just never know. Technically speaking the diary isn't on the way home but most days I seem to pass it anyway. It looks good for the operator to see me down there is much as possible.

Yesterday I missed a few gimmie 26 yard shots, that I've been making a high percentage of, so I need to check the zero on the Remington Summit. This morning I took the Big Cat and put it in the truck, it hasn't been up in the rotation in a while anyway. I parked at the usual spot and only waited a few minutes before a few Starlings landed in the 30 yard tree. Load, aim, squeeze, and the first bird of the day is on the ground. I walked over and retrieved my prize then headed back to the truck. A few minutes later some more birds land on the 26 yard electric fence wire. Repeat the load aim squeeze sequence, but this time the bird takes flight in a cloud of feathers. I miss a few more from both distances. Then a Starling comes in and lands at 10 yards. He's blurry in the scope because the AO is still set for a greater distance. But at 10 yards I think I can't miss. I shoot, and man let me tell ya, a pellet striking center of mass from only ten yards is as load as the gun it comes from. Instant death, but the dang thing gets hung up in the branches on the way down. Seven or eight hits later it's finally on the ground. I should have finished with at least 6 or 7 birds but instead it was 2 down and 2 fly offs. And I mean way off, I watched them for 100 yards after the shot and they still looked healthy.

I'll post some picture later tonight, but for now I have to get my daughter and head off to meet the wife and father inlaw for dinner. I think tomorrow the 350 is up.

You need a gun camera!  Mine is just a velcro strip with some padding attached to a cheap digital video camera.  That way we can LIVE your shots!  Sorry, but we are addicts here :(

I do need to rig something like that up. I think this weekend I'm going to see if I can get the wife to do a little video work for me. She like to sit in the car and read while I'm out "messin around." I just checked the zero on the Summit and it was off, seems like it may have taken a small tumble during the Rendon family photo shoot. So I think that's why I missed so many easy shots yesterday. But the bad new is the Big Cat is still driven tacks, so that makes me feel even worse about today poor hit ratio. I've noticed when I get a little over confident that when things go South. Like I said earlier, first shot today was a solid hit and instant kill, and I think I got a little to proud of my self. Then when I started concentrating on technique I did a little better. Probably doesn't help to bounce back and forth between so many guns. They each have a different trigger feel. I need to break down and order a gold trigger for the Big Cat, and smooth out the trigger on the Summit. The creep on the Summit is longer than a night in jail. I plan on taking that one down this weekend and do some work to smooth it out a little. The B28 is going through some final tweeking and then she'll be field ready.

For sure order the gold trigger. My Whisper was okay before, but the trigger made it into my most accurate rifle!  You just touch the trigger and it goes!  I love it.  Like I've said it is so accurate it almost isn't any fun to shoot, but when my friends and I are shooting I bring it out to show off :)

I feel your pain on that. I had a runner I chased all over the garden. I missed him twice and hit him 3 times before he gave up the ghost. I HAD been feeling really good about my shooting.

I figured the scope got "un-zeroed" so I took a shot at my target box (pellet box with 4 dots drawn on it.) out at about 20 yrds. It has been sitting out there for a week or two, so it's faded and a little soft, but it works. So, I carefully line up my shot at the left bottom dot and shoot. I don't see the hole. Crap! I'm off the paper! I usually end up creeping left, so I took another shot at the bottom right dot. I think I see the hole, but it's about a centimeter to the left of the dot. Huh! I take two more shots. I can't see those, but I have an idea.

I went out to check and as I suspected, 3 out of 4 shots are inside the 3/8" dots and are virtually invisible to my eye, even through glass. The 4th was only slightly off target. I was not off the paper, I was right on. My sloppy kill on the bird was not due to gun nor scope, just my hurried or overconfident shooting.
