Gamo Socom Extreme
« on: March 03, 2010, 11:03:43 AM »
Hi All,

I had purchased a gamo big cat 1200 about two years ago and enjoyed it but decided it was time to upgrade.  I was very happy with my gamo but varmints most likely didn't feel the same way.  After much looking, reading, and "researching" i decided to go with the gamo Socom Extreme.  I am going to mount a leapers 3-16x50 scope on it (love it) but i was looking for any suggestions for tune ups or easy mods.  I also have read that owners were surprised by how loud this gun is.  Obviously i can use heavier ammo but don't want to potentially damage any parts by using to heavy of ammo.   Also does anyone know how wide this barrel is exactly?

Thanks,

Aj

Welcome Aj  nice to have you with us on GTA :)

Congrats on your new shooter, she should be a real power house.   Can't help you with the dimensions of the barrel as I don't own one but I'm sure someone will chime in and give you the info.  With all that power the rifle will no doubt benefit from the use of heavier pellets, I would just stay away from the real heavy ones as  a steady diet.  You will of course have to do grouping tests to see what pellets the rifle likes but that's 1/2 the fun.   As for the rifle being loud.... I don't think it will be all that loud.

Anyway, welcome to GTA and I'll be looking forward to your future posts....

Also..... I sent you a "pm"

Jeff

First off WELCOME TO THE GTA FAMILY Aj happy to have you aboard. :) I personally don't think the Extreme is that loud I own a Hunter 1250.22 Royal which is the same as the Extreme and it doesn't have a loud report. As for Suppressors or other S word we don't mention them here due to the legality of the use of them. I'm assuming you have a .177 Extreme if your talking about using heaver pellet's. The Extremes can be tuned to tame the harshness of a Magnum with great result's, I tune the Extreme series airguns. There are piston seal and spring upgrades out there for the Extremes the piston seal upgrade requires a custom piston seal button to except the seal. Tuning it will also reduce the noise coming from the action with it's huge spring along other area's inside that require some TLC. Ed

Thanks for the feed back,

To add on to one of my questions (does anyone know the width of the barrel on a gamo socom extreme?)

If anyone has a gamo hunter extreme and knows the width of that barrel it would be very helpful.

Im pretty sure there the same width.  For curious readers, the reason i ask is because they both have i thicker barrel.  I am not sure if this is for function or look but i am looking into bipods and just assumed that a bipod that mounted around the barrel would be the easiest.  If anyone knows if there are any bipods that can be mounted to the stock that would be helpful as well.  Im not a huge fan of drilling holes into my stocks but i guess sometimes you just have to it.

Thanks again,

Aj

Oh the barrel diameter if yours has the shroud on it you should be able to unscrew the shroud and expose the barrel to get it's OD. eD

It's a full barrel shroud the screws onto the barrel, threaded in the front. Removing it will give you access to the barrel and to get a OD measurement of the barrel unless you plan on mounting s bipod on the shroud. Ed

Sorry didnt mean to make a new post.

And im loving the discussion.  Typically, from my experience, message boards such as this normally just have a bunch of people arguing and accomplishing nothing.  I will make sure to be aware of the "S" word.  I did do a little reading on the legality issues with air guns.  Personally, I am a resident of P.a., which is pretty good about these sorts of issues.  I was a little freaked out though when i purchased my first hand gun (glock17) and was out the door in no longer than 25 minutes.  But back to the issue of the "S" word, all shooting i do is on private property under the permission of the owners (my girlfriends dad hahaha).  Plenty of land so im not worried about the gun being to loud i would just like to believe that in a perfect world it would be perfectly silent.

Ed i was wondering if you could email me more information on your tune-ups (pricing, time, etc) or if you dont mind just post it under this board.  Also do you believe that your barrel is around the same width as the socom extreme? If so, could you manage to take a quick measurement (no need to be precise) and post it.

Thanks

Aj

was looking at bipods that could just tighten right around the shroud.  The one prospect bipod i believe could reach around a diameter up to 19mm

Be careful the S-word isn't a State issue. It is a Federal Issue. Use of a detachable S-word is the same as owning an illegal machine gun. To legally own the S-word takes the same Federal tax/permit as a machine gun. If you want a much quieter rifle you have two real choices: Move to England or buy a quieter rifle with a shrouded barrel like a Marauder. By the way Welcome and good shooting.

The barrel itself with the shroud off is 14.83mm and with the shroud on it's 25.12mm. I will send you a e-mail on the Extreme tune. :) Ed

Thank you Craig,

I have realized my mistake and wont happen again.  If you read anything after my original post i think you would have learned that there are a variety of different ways to quite down an air rifle thanks to other members of the forum.  I also realize that it is a federal issue.  I was simply stating that i am lucky enough to live in a state where firearms are used often and very popular amongst hunters, target shooters, and law enforcement.  Also that I do my shooting on private property without the worry or hassle of neighbors or police.  Meaning, i do not have to worry about anyone complaining about my shooting.  You may ask then, why care about you know what ("S")? My answer is most likely contributed to my youth, because a you know what is just simply COOL.  But anyways i would give the great men and women of the law enforcement the benefit of doubt and go as far to say that if a police officer in my area did see someone shorting an air gun with a "S" that they would not cause a problem.  It wouldn't surprise me if they joined in the shooting for a few minutes.  After all most of the police officers around me became cops so that they could shoot and enjoy all the other benefits of being cops.

Thank you for the concern and heads up,

Aj

Good Luck with that AJ. You are indeed fortunate to live in an area where the police are more concerned with keeping the peace, andprotecting and serving society. But my nearly 30 year association with various police forces is that many, in this day and age, are more concerned with the heavy handed enforcement of THE LAW.A number of years ago I had nearly 1500 people out of a town of 2500 show up at a public forum to discuss the heavy handed operations of the local police including continuousand on going civil rights violations. Most of the constabulary around here wouldn't think twice if they could make a "Federal collar"

I won't need any luck,

Thanks to you and others i have been steered towards greener pastures.  Alternative methods are much smarter and can improve the performance of my gun drastically.  This type of knowledge and input is exactly the reason i signed up for this forum.

Thanks,

Aj

Welcome aboard Aj. I shot a dozen springs out of several gamo 1250's and tested a lot of pellets. Concluded that the CP heavy 10.5 gr pellet was at least for me the pellet of choice. You should try it. My 1250 and Extreme barrels also had visible tooling marks that tended to cause rapid fouling until a proper cleaning and a little minor lapping minimized the cleaning cycle. I clean and lube those pellets in that gun too. If you can get Ed aka Shadow to tune your SoCom Extreme you will no doubt be glad you did.Not many tuners do this model so you are fortunate that a well known and respected member here is available. Good luck with your rifle and enjoy shooting what is probably the most powerful spring piston .177 rifle out there. They can be very accurate and you already know about the power. You're probably gonna want a trigger upgrade(GRT111) as well if you haven't already.
