Anther if you could have.............?
« on: March 04, 2010, 02:22:45 AM »
If you had to pick 3 firearms for Self-Defence,  Hunting, and Home Defence.    What would your selections be?   Include Calibers also if you want.

I seperated Self Defence from Home Defence because the thinking on Self Defence is portability and concealment if needed.   However if you want to combine the 2  in your responses feel free to so so.   And a short comment on  why you made your particular choices.

I lean towards  12 guage shotguns.   .223 semi-auto rifles.   .22 long rifle pistols and rifles.
Gentleman of Fortune.

Hum-bug!

Mike this is too easy.A 12 guage shotgun could certainly serve as a versatile tool for all purposes. (if you could only have one gun this would be a smart choice.) For a defense pistol, I like a 1911 in .45acp.For my third choice I would want a .22 rimfire rifle.Of course with being limited to just these three I probably wouldn't go elk or moose hunting.I could make do I suppose if I could add a 4th choice for big game and longer shots. That would be a good rifle in 30-06.

Don't do any hunting, but for the rest:
My mossberg shotgun would do well for the home defense, as would the Mini14
Haven't carried yet, but have a .38spl which should suffice (although a compact Kimber would be nicer if I could ever afford one) :)

Personal defense is a toss-up. I have a Dan Wesson .357 Magnum but it's limited to 6 shots. Of course, it would hopefully not take any, but maybe one shot to get out of a situation. I took the carry class and got my licenses with a Beretta 92FS 9mm. With +P ammo, that is about the smallest caliber I'd use for personal defense.

Home defense would have to be a 12ga pump, preferably short barrel. There's something aboutthe sound of chambering that would put enough fear in an intruder (unless drugged up)that they would not wish to find out what that noise came from. And at night in a dark room, you are bound to hit your target.

Hunting??? I have a Remington 742BDL in 30-06 but I wouldlean moretoward a lighter all-aroundshooter like a Remington 700 in 270 with good glass.

Happy Shooting!!!!

Carry gun.
Not that I can hit anything with a pistol, but I'd like one of my brother's Colt 1911.

Home defense.
Any one of my Mossbergs with 3/4, or 1  ounce trap loads for home defence. At indoor ranges they act like a slug, but with less risk of  over penitration hazard of slugs, or buckshot.

Hunting.
If I can only have one gun - a  Savage in .243. Good range of bullet sizes and choices that do well on Woodchucks, Yotes, and Deer in this kind of  country.

HK USP .45 - A pistol that's hard to miss with and built like a tank.

Rem 870 Pump (modded) - They are just too much fun and can be devastating.

Any good .308 bolt action - I like my Weatherby varmint barreled version. Heavy but accurate.

Self defense hiking  in the woods  - a .357 MAG, home defense .32 revolver and/or a 12 ga - self defense "out 'n about" my .32 cal revolver. - (I very rarely carry one around town, pepper spray instead)

My choices would be:

For personal defense/home defense Kahr Model in .40 caliber PM4044N[/b] (3" Barrel)
Black polymer frame, matte blackened stainless steel slide with Tritium night sights

For home defense/bird hunting/ deer hunting and other big game a 12 gauge shotgun with interchangeable barrels.

A bolt action .22 rim fire, maybe a CZ or a Ruger 77/22.

No one thing is perfect for every thing but these three would let me do most things.

Self defense and home defense is the FN FNP 40 cal. loaded with 135 gr blue glacier rounds for the home. They are the ones that are a copper jacket filled with the little tiny lead balls. They will only penetrate about 10 inches and completely explode in the target. They are nasty. For the street cary I switch to the Hornady tap hollow points. They hit hard and dont over penetrate. Its light, compact, very comfortable to carry concealed (yes I have a liscence for that) and holds 14 rounds + 1 in the hole. Recovers fast if you need the 2nd shot.

Havent done any hunting with a long rifle.

And if the Stuff really hits the fan and I need to really defend the house my Benelli M4 12 gauge will do the trick. 7 3 in rounds or 8  2 3/4. Semi auto ghost ring sights. Its nice in quick situations.

Then if they want to hole up out in the yard out of shot gun range and hekle me I got the PSL and the 188 head stamped steel core rounds. Those are really scary rounds. Have 2 cases for a rainy day. I figure that would keep their heads down till the boys in blue show up.

12 ga. pump = the universal weapon. I have an olderBrowning BPS short barrel as my primary, but I am looking for something more tactical.

Ruger GP100. I don't have a modern automatic big bore, although a couple are on my wish list. I can hit whatever I want with the .357, though, and it always goes off.

Ruger Mini-30, spray and pray, only for when the Red Army parachutes into the yard.

I would always want my 10/22, but for small game I can get by easily with air powered guns. I have a safe full of backups but these are the essential PBs.
