No more shooting for my wife!!
« on: March 05, 2010, 10:23:41 AM »
I just finished doing a complete tune & lube on one of the B3-2s that I bought last year.
I went ouside and set up a camera tripoid with a sand filled sock to sight in the 4x32 Bushnell
that I just put on it.

It only took 8 shots and it was staying in a 50 cent size circle.  Good enough for now.

My wife who has never shot a rifle before, asked me to show her how to shoot it.

I explained the lite hold and told her to gently sqeeze the trigger.

She put the rifle on the sock bag and looked through the scope.
She cannot close one eye and leave the other open.  He He..
She covers her left eye with her left hand, the rifle resting on the tripoid, held
only with her right hand.

Snap!! First shot is fired.  I check the Gamo target.  Amost a bullseye. (In the 9 circle)
Just Luck!!  She shoots again... In the 8 circle...  A third shot - another 9!!

She was shooting from 20 yards.  Grrrrrrr....

She asked... How did I do?  I said So So, then  walked away.

No more shooting for her......  I am glad that my friends were not there.

You should encourage her. Could lead to an open checkbook!

Did any body else hear that? It sounded like a Docs mancard going through the shredder! Lol just kidding these things happen, never to me, but I've heard stories about stuff like that. I would have faked injury Or kicked the bench or tripped and slapped the gun out of her hand and broke it before I let that happen to me.

There's only one thing to do now go concur something and get your man back. It dosent matter if you bring down a charging rhino or stomp some old ladies daisies. You just have to go dominate something!

Take her, love her and keep her, a woman who will shoot with you and not complain about your passion to you, is a rare and wonderful thing to be treasured.

She shoots with both eyes open? Gee, who does that? Professional snipers. And she's smart enough to walk away while she's winning, too. Advice - don't play cards with her, either.  :D

LOL!!  You guys are so bad.  I freelance at an archery pro shop and I teach new archers how to shoot.  There's a couple of ladies that I've taught to shoot and the men in the group that I shoot with are all cussing me out because those ladies are outshooting them!!  It also doesn't help that I've tuned their bows either.  LOL

Women are inherently easier to teach to shoot because they don't have that machismo that men have.  They will listen to your instructions and do exactly as you tell them.  I tell men all the time, "don't buy a 70# bow," when I see them struggling to pull back a 60# bow.  But, they don't listen, they buy the 70#er and I set it up for them.  Then they get it home, shoot 3 shots, call up and say, "I can't pull the bow back.  I think I need a 60#er."  I tell them to bring it in, but we'll have to order 60# limbs at extra cost.  Can't just exchange the bow with a 60#er.  Don't know if it's been dry-fired, so can't take the chance.  Then when the 60# limbs come and I install them, they shoot it, and they love the bow.

Anyway, I digress.  Nothing wrong with a woman being able to shoot.  Why'd you marry her if you didn't want to do things with her?  :)

Great Story! Something very similar happened to me and my father in law today.

Glenn (my father in law) and I took a trek up to Wisconsin to my son's house to pick up the Remington NPSS I got for him for Christmas (long story) that finally made it from Crosman (have to have rifles shipped to his house because you can't ship to Illinois). Stopped at Uncle Mikes for a Ruben, then Gander Mountain on the way home.

Once home we un-boxed the new beauty, cleaned it, tightened the screws, mounted the scope and sighted her in on my little 10 meter range in the basement. So Glenn is putting pellets down range and not grouping all that well, but having just a great time doing it.

I go upstairs to see what the wife is doing and she says words to the affect "want me to come down there and show you how to shoot that new gun?" ...trying to play this out a little I reply, sure we would appreciate any assistance to get it zero'd in.

Her Dad cocks, loads a pellet, and tells her, lets see what you can do. As she's settling in, we're getting the treatment from her...The shooting bag is too low; so we put a couple of pieces of plywood under it. Now it's too high. Geeze...anyway we found the right size pieces for her and she begins shooting. 1st shot high at 1 oclock. 2nd shot...thru the same hole, 3rd shot, same hole. I make a scope change for here. Next shot center bull....then another center bull, then another. She looks at us and says "put some of those matches up and I'll shoot their heads off; so I stuck 4 long wooden matches in front of the target.. I'll be darned if she didn't shear the heads off those 4 matches. (Took her 5 shots though. Ha!) Those were the big long 12" matches. She then asks if we want her to shoot the heads from the small matches (the 2" kind). We both said NO at the same time, thanked her for helping us zero the scope and asked if she could go back upstairs.

Afterward neither one of us could come close to what she did right before our eyes. Glenn eventually went home saying he's got alot of practicing to do.

FYI, Glenn is an experienced hunter for over 50 years. I am a 17th award rifle expert with the M-16 from my days in the Corps. This isn't the wife's first time shooting, but she's only ever shot pellet guns since last summer.

Great Stories, Great Hobby, and a Great Forum...thanks

Eighteen years ago my wife would do that. She even has a few trophys. But after both the girls were born, she quit. She doesn't shoot anymore, she doesn't hunt anymore, she doesn't like to ride the Wing, and certainly not a sport bike, anymore: be thankful your partner is still your partner.

So....Archer,

What do I need to do to make it easier to pull back a 70 lb bow?

If it's a compound bow, you'll need 60# limbs.  Or, let out the limbs till it's 60#.  Mind you, letting out the limbs also increases the drawlength of the bow by a half inch and change where the bow's sweet spot is.

You could also try a different type of release.  A Winn Free Flight release makes it feel like you're pulling back 5 - 10 less pounds.

Dito what Ed said !!! And it doesn't hurt the relationship to share some of the same interests too.  If she enjoys shooting, it's a plus on a number of levels.
