anyone shooting a Russian Saiga in 308
« on: March 05, 2010, 12:30:02 PM »
Picked one of these up on impulse over a year ago and have yet to fire her.  Was wondering if I should try it out or sell it and get something else.

Suggestions?

I don't own a Saiga, but I do have or had numerous HK G3, Sig AMT, FN FAL, Valmet and other high end .308 "battle rifles". One perspective is that the Kalashnikov pattern Saiga in .308 isn't what you'd call a proven battle rifle, and that has a bearing on value and desirability.

I kind of like the way the Saiga .308 looks, assuming you got the hunter style stock. It reminds me of the Valmet hunters... and would be a suitable rifle for that purpose, IMO.

What did you buy it for, and why haven't you shot it yet? The answers to those questions will probably provide an answer to your current one.

Cheers,
C

One of those spur of the moment buys.  Always wanted a 308 (don't know why).  Sort of like the style.  Had picked up a gunbroker transfer at a local FFL and he had several of them in various configs and yes this is the sporter version.  Had heard this series was good for reliablility but accuracy could be an issue.  Was going thru a phase about a year ago, also picked up a Remington 7615 at the same time.

You might find it's a better shooter than conventional wisdom would indicate. Most accuracy values for AK style weapons are basedon the, typically Chinese and eastern European surplus crap,7.62X39 cartridge... which is to say not so great. As we know the .308is an inherentlyaccurate cartridge and can beeven in some grades of surplus crap... you might be in for a surprise.

A friend of mine has one he's also got the 12ga version. It's a darn good rifle!  It's not a MOA rifle, but it never jams! He's had it for a couple years now and with multiple range visits he's cleaned it maybe TWICE. It's dry and dirty, but it still goes bang every time. The only hiccup it's had to my knowledge is failure to feeds because of a dented magazine. That's about it.

It jumps pretty good too! But that's part of what makes it a fun gun   :D

Dad has one, and seemed to shoot well at 50 yards.  Haven't shot it much, and neither has he.

I too bought one a few years back and stil lhaven't fired it. The main reason because ammo prices went through the roof.

From what I read it's a decent shooter. Have you thought about coverting it to an AK?

I also bought the Saiga .223, 410 and 12 guage.

Actually I bought it because it didn't look like an AK just to be different.  Had good luck with ammoman.com on the ammo.  Guess I need to clean it up and take it out to see what I think.

Did you buy any High cap mags for it? I think I bought either a 20 or 25 round mag for the 308.

I did  shoot my 410 w/ 10 round mag...fun, fun,fun....talk about a small game hunter.

The .223 and 12 gauage I haven't shot either, but did buy a 25 round mag for the .223 and a 10 rounnd mag / 20 round drum for the 12 guage.

Let me know how she shoots.

Would love to know of a reliable brand of mag to buy.  Last year when I picked it up seems like several were having issues with the aftermarket units.

Suggestions?
