Can some guns not be tamed?
« on: March 06, 2010, 09:21:15 AM »
I bought a Hammerli Titan for almost nothing on a website.  It is a really nice looking gun.  Though they are similar the Titan isn't quite the quality of the TF 89 Contender.

What has really gotten me down is that I can't keep the scope mounted.  I even put my brand new four bolt one piece mount on it today and it messed up the metal on it!  Any secrets without spending as much as I paid for the gun on BLK mounts?  I've done everything folks tell you on here. While it came with the scope stop it BROKE IT!

I've never had this issue with the TF 89 only the Titan.  It just has a severe recoil compared to other guns.  I've taken it apart and lubed it so it isn't shooting as harshly as it was.  I also replaced the seal after it blew.  That was almost $20 on an $80 gun!

Right now I"m shooting it with open sights which it seems okay.  However, I can't get the sights to go down far enough for close range shooting.  It shoots about 2" high with the rear sight cranked all the way down.

Advice or just go ahead and use it for an open sight tin can gun?

I have the same problem on my falcon hunter.  I am at the point that i am very tempted to have a friend weld the 1 pc mount right to the rail.  I don't bother with the stops anymore bc they have all been ripped right off, and they always take a chunk of the rail with them when they shear off. Something else to consider is that these guns produce so much recoil no scope can hold up to it for all that long away... they refuse to hold zero for any length to time so... with that in mind perhaps don't worry about the movement too much just zero your scope each time before going hunting so for at least the next 20 shots you will be accurate.

It sound's like she still need's a more intense tune to tame her bro. A lube and seal just doesn't do it on some shooters and the Gamo Extremes are the same way with a harsh reaction when shot. Sometimes you have to put some of the internals on a diet so to speak to achieve a smoother response from the internals. Ed

i just picked up a talon magnum .22 cal instead of the .25 cal falcon hunter for the same thing im thinking of a tune on the talon to calm her down my pistol the 800 mag is a beast and my scope moves a bit after 20 shots looking at a good scope stop
keep your eyes on the prize & dont let it crawl away.

I wonder about just having someone weld on a stop?  My luck it would snap it off!

Well I'll tell ya fellas if your havin those kinda problems your just gonna have to drill a hole in the tube for your stop pin so you can use it!

You are probably right.  It wouldn't matter on the AR1000 ones anyway as there is nothing underneath where the pin would need to go.  I thought my 350 was rough when I first got it, but this Titan is a bear!  When my new mount comes in (that has a stop pin), then I'll drill out a place for it.  In the meantime I'm going to keep shooting it with open sights to add some wear to it and maybe tame it some more that way.

My TF 99 is coming in sometime next week. I wonder how that one will be?

On another note, my TF 89 has really smoothed out after the lubrication.  It has a new four hole one piece mount and a new (to me) Leapers 3 x 9 50 scope.  I was reaching out and touching targets today with it!  I'm going to keep up the practice with it.  I'm going to take two air guns to Kansas for Prairie Dogs and right now it is getting the nod along with the 350.  I may sight in the 350 for longer ranges and the TF 89 for the shorter out to 35 yard shots.  I'm game to try a 60+ yard PDawg shot again.  I was out at my friend Jim's practicing on my Gamo Squirrel at 60 yards.

Titan's are same gun as the TF-89 with exception of stock. Exactly the same powerplant and trigger. With a tune they perform very well. Hard hitting suckers as well...:) I use to own one but it was just to powerful for my liking..:) They should of offered it in a .22 cal.

Love the barrel work!! Do you have to put in a lighter spring to control them?  Honestly, I think that the Contender series has a bit better QC and stuff than that Titan.  After owning both, I'd pay the extra to get a TF 89.  The nicer stock, sights, checkering and the better cocking arm all make them better guns.

Ya for sure the TF is nicer. Mine was literally a tack driver in .22 The triggers are excellent for a Chinese gun.
