I posted yesterday that the doves around my place are now getting a free pass because with spring in the air I’m going to leave them alone until they have had a chance at reproduction. We’ll word must have gotten out because today they are just lousy in the yard. So far today I’ve had better then a dozen of the non protected Eurasian Collared Doves and a handful of Mourning Doves scattered about.
Well I decide to go out and clean up the garage a little bit and as I walk out the open garage door to throw some stuff in the garbage can, making a lot of noise I might add, I look over and there are 4 or 5 Starlings having ago on the suet feeders. I turn to look at them fully expecting they’re going to take flight. No they just keep at it, I watch them for a few more seconds and decide to head in and get the gun. What happens next? You guessed as soon as they see the barrel poking out the wide open garage door they all take flight, but not the doves, they just look around wondering why the black birds are so skittish. I was able to exact my revenge on 2 starlings down the road earlier this morning, while I was headed to the store to get something for breakfast, but I was unable to retrieve them because I only had house slippers on and with the recently melted snow the ground was muddy. My wife is on to me when I don hunting boots just to run to the store.
