Introduction and my(kids) b3
« on: March 07, 2010, 01:34:41 PM »
Was looking on the net for b3 parts and found this wonderful place! thanks for the wealth of information you all have posted...!!

My dad gave my oldest son his old b3 we picked up about 17 years ago at a tool sale somewhere(probably one of those harborfreight traveling things..) back then I think they where telling everyone it was a 1000fps( ha ha ha)  gun either way we figured for 25 bucks what the hell LOL... Big, heavy, clunky as all get out but it shot suprisingly well and hit hard.... we played with that thing for a few summers putting a couple thousand rounds into the back yard at cans and paper and ground squirles, cow birds etc etc.. eventualy that old thing got sat into a corner and forgotten about all these years....

Well the old man got himself a whisper here recently and my 10 year old loved shooting it so pop dug out the old b3 and gave it to my boy well about 15 years of non use had taken its toll mainly on the breech seal it pretty much was crumbling apart and thats what lead me to look for some replacement parts and find this place!!!

well a few trips to the hardware store and my son now has a nice tuned b3
homemade breech seal (from some vinyl hose) seals up nice and tight tested with tissue(nother trick learned reading here the last few days)
completly degreased and then deburred internals
"thrust washer" mod with a few stainless steal washers for the spring ends coated in lithium/molly greese
polished spring ends
refurbished leather compression seal soaked in 30 weight oil and silicone spray(will do it again eventually with the neatsfoot/dielectric grease mix)
expansion washer mod to replace the worn leather disks that was originaly used for the expansion washers in the compression seal...
internals all relubed with either silicone, silicone/oil  or lithium/moly grease where appropriate...
sear and trigger polish

Did not polish the compression chamber because it had a nice smooth finish

other then that the spring guide is different then the ones normaly described... its all metal with a steel spacer...took some pics will post them when I figure out how... think I seen one other old b3 on here with the same type of spring guide... IMHO its MUCH nicer then the plastic ones they seem to have now and gives probably close to an inch of extra spring room if you where to remove the spacer(slides off) to use other springs if one was so inclined...

anyways the results
WOW trigger though still heavy is smooth and clean with predictable break
after initial deiseling it smoothed out after about 20 rounds and now just hazes alittle (hear that a good thing with leather seals?) and is producing some very nice thumbnail size 15 shot groups at 12 yards and thats as good as I can shoot with iron sights..

Power feels good whole gun is smoother but feels much stronger then pre tune from educated geustimate of speeds I am guessing right around the 600fps mark.....

the only problem.... now my son owns a excelent b3 and I dont have a single pellet rifle to shoot with and am unemployed ...... ahh screw it I can find 25 bucks and get me a new b3 :) .... LOL

Ok now after writing my short story I would like to know if anyone knows a easy simple way of mounting a scope to this thing(old model no grooves) or it is a drill and tap job??(though doesnt look like you could get enough threads to get some mounts to hold??)

LOL if your still reading thanks for sticking it out to the end :)
M

yea other then it printing about 2 inches high at 10-12 yards... rear sight bottomed out lol.... deciding on my next course to bring it into center.... either some heavy heat shrink tubing on the front blade to make it longer or some filing on the rear sight to bring it down or a bit of both....

That and I have to find one of my OWN now :)

I am in Ohio... just added it to my profile lol :) thanks for the welcome!

update to the grouping high...

thought what the hell and took it out to 15 meters and it was shooting even higher even after stoning the rear sight down and with it bottomed out.... so I came to the conclussion the barrel was canted a bit up.... blocked it up got out a deadblow hammer flexed her a bit and tapped around to relieve stress  and now she is grouping how she should be with plenty of adjustment both ways... have to say I have removed dents from shotgun barrels have cut and crowned a few powder burners plus the normal tuning, tinkering, and polishing...... first time I had to chuck one up and bend a barrel.... its kinda scary to tell the truth...

she shoots better then I can hold with fat posted iron sights and that more then enough for my boy...

well I said I would post a couple pics of the spring guide so here they are...

And

seems all the spring guides I have seen on here are plastic... think I like this guide better and with that spacer removable it would give about a extra inch for a different sping

mike,...i seem to recal that someone on the yellow forums substituted a crosman quest spring into his b3. fps increase was supposedly substantial,....and the spring fits !! its about $9.00 through crosman.
