Some pellets are better at certain ranges?
« on: March 08, 2010, 02:16:23 PM »
Today I shot a BUNCH with my TF 89.  It really likes RWS Superdomes the best.  However I ran out.  So I grabbed a tin of the pointed ones that have the same weight.  Made a few minor adjustments and they were shooting great at 10 meters.

Now the Superdomes shoot almost flat out to thirty yards.  The pointed pellets shot about 2" high!  They also don't group as well as the Superdomes.

As a compromise, I switched over to CPHPs.  While the gun doesn't like them the best, it did give me the same accuracy at longer ranges as the Superdomes.

Anyone else found seen this?  I mean a pellet that shoots fine up close and then bad at a distance or one that is kinda loose close but just fine at longer ranges?

Maybe it was just me or the wind causing it too.  I'll get in some more shooting tomorrow and see.

It just amazes me how much every little thing makes a difference on springer.

Yes. For example, wadcutters do great at short range but aren't the best design for long shots. Some pellets lose stability faster than others.

Welcome to the world of pellets.

I concur with what Redfeather said.

Half the fun is finding the right pellet for a given range, in a given air rifle.

Thier are alot of factors that come into play with pellets and the gun your using them in! Just to mention a few, first off like RF said and the quality of the pellet used, not all pellets are created equal! RWS SD are a better quality pellet than the CPHP's, I personaly have shot cphp's out of my 89 .22cal and watched them corkscrew out to the target I was shooting at 80yds where as the RWS SD fly straight! This is caused by the way the pellet is made the CPHP's are not  balanced as well thats why they corkscrew at long ranges and arnt as accurate as the RWS's and or the BBl just dosen't like the hardness of the CPHP's over the softness of the RWS SD's as said thier are alot of factors that come into play here! Thiers a reason why JSB's & H&N and some of the other pellets cost as much as they do! Cause they work! They are made better with better tooling and better QC, this is why they work out of most AG's really well, remember the ole saying you get what you pay for[ most of the time] Here I'll tell something funny my Chinese rifles wont shoot Chinese pellets, but they'll shoot the expensive German ones and my German rifles shoot the Chinese pellets really well go figure! Just something for you to think about, a softer pellet will comform to the rifling better than a hard pellet will but you don't want it too soft or the air pressure will destroy the skirt of the pellet which effects accuracy!

A pellet gun is just like a woman, just when you think you've figured her out, she throws something else into the mix. Half the fun of shooting a pellet gun is trying to figure her out, can't say the same about a woman.

I'm with you Mark.  My Chinese guns like the German Pellets a LOT!  My Whisper like Crossman pointed pellets.  My 350 doesn't really like CPHPs but it shoots them well at hunting ranges beyond that it likes the SuperDomes too!

I've never figured out what my Air Hawk likes.  Somedays she likes Daisy pellets, others domed heavy crossman pellets.  I"ve just about written it off all together as a lesson on spending good money after bad.

You get what you pay for is true.  While I can get a lot of Crossman pellets for not too much, to consistently group and hit stuff with my TF 89 I need to use the RWS pellets.  Now if I'd just learn that and stop buying so many cheap guns or stop buying cheap guns and pay for them to get tuned.......

Hey thier ain't nothin wrong with cheap gun's I love them just as much as rest of you do but yah learn thier limits unless wanna put some money into them or as you are seeing for yourself an by the time you do that you could have bought a nicer gun! I look at those things as learning curves I wouldn't have learned what I've learned with out some good ole Chinese AG's in my hands to play with! But none the less thier still good guns yah just gotta work with them alittle and when you find the right combo that works well with the gun at hand don't change it, sooner or later you'll find a pellet that will work well with your air hawk. Try some of the air arms pellets in that gun an see what happens!

Noper.  I'm not even sure I want to spend any more money trying to get it to shoot better.  It is a good tin can gun and that is about it.

I know my gun shot rws super dome very well at 35 ft then bad at 30 yds. I shoot jsb best at all ranges through my big cat and hunter. They both shot the jsb high right but tight groups at 35 ft so I adjusted my guns to those pellets cause they group the best. Hn crow magnum are a very close 3rd but shoot high about 1 in at 35 ft. I tried about 15 types of pellets and crossman premeres on their way. Just gott try them till you are happy and shot them at the range you are hunting at. That's what I learned.

Mines mostly like the dome ones for longer distances....the really pointy ones suck in all my air rifles.  Maybe they`re better with less powerful airguns.

I haven't done any extensive testing but during my target shooting last year I learned a few things about the pellets my RWS34 likes the best. For ranges longer than 10m I only shoot Superdomes. CPHPs work pretty well, but just ain't as good. For 10m target I shoot Beeman WC with very nice results. In fact I just beat my last year 10m standing score this week with a 193 / 200 using the Beemans. At 25yd... they wander like a butterfly. But, if I had to choose only one pellet to shoot for the rest of my days, it would be Superdomes hands down. I love those things.

Last time m'lady and I went to the Kittery Trading Post in Maine we bought every tin of domes they had on the shelf.
