Another Great Gun To Own
« on: March 09, 2010, 09:54:41 PM »

I bought a RWS 34P Compact from my good friend David Kirby last summer. He brought it with him to our fun shoot for me. Turns out that it is one of the best RWS rifles that I own. It came with a two pound muzzle brake but David kept it and I duplicated another muzzle brake from aluminum. Much lighter...:) I have no numbers or targets to put up but just the overall shooting and shot cycle's are awsome. For those who are looking at Gamo Whispers, Crosman air guns in the same price range you should take another look at the RWS 34P Compact. I think Pyaramyd Air sells them for $299.00.

I have since replaced the original synthetic stock with one of Timmy's custom RWS 34 walnut stocks. She sure is purdy..:) One last thing is that the Pro Compact does not have the shiny bluing as all the other models. It has a great finish but has the flat black look to it.

Ditto to that Gene. I  agree with you 110% on the 34 Diana's. These little shooters are a pleasure to own and shoot. That's why you rarely ever see them in the classifieds I reckon. You'll never see mine up for sale. Just got mine back from being on loan to my Dad, and after shooting it yesterday afternoon, I never realized how much I missed it!!!! He likes the TF-97 better because it looks like a "real" gun!! LOL's I've been in the retro mood lately and have removed the scope set up on a few of my rifles and did the same with my 34. I can knock a tin can off the shelf of my homemade 1" silouette target trap at 25 yards off hand with ease and regularity. Just a fun rifle to shoot folks. Forget the Gamos, Crosmans, Daisies.  Especially with the money involved with tunes, parts, etc. just to make them into acceptable shooters. When it's all said and done, you'll still end up ahead with a 34 Diana!!! "Do the Math", tjk

Thanks Graham. Timmy does exceptional work. I bought the tri lame walnut because it was unique. So far every stock Timmy has made for me fits me like a glove. And Thomas, I feel that any springer can be improved with at tune. Even the RWS 34 has been tuned..:) What I have notice over the time I have been tuning air guns is that most all the RWS air guns ae very dry from the factory. But the difference between the others you mentioned and RWS is quality of machined parts. They have there own design and many other's have copied it. Even the Ruger Air Hawk is almost a duplicate of the RWS 34 with excepton of the articulating cocking linkage. I have had a couple of the $100.00 Ruger Air Hawks and after a good tunie they shoot as good as any RWS 34. So do the math..:) With a tune and the cost of the Ruger you are still under $250.00.

Very pretty Gene - nice grain and color.

I especially like the way the grain "flows" down the piston grip area toward the butt. Tim did a good job of  laying out to have the grain follow the shape and keep strength to the max. True form and function.

Tis true Gene, but a DIY'r can perform a lube tune on a better built, better toleranced parts "factory dry" Diana 34 with a $20 lube kit from Macarri and still come under the $250 mark. The clones are close, but  the genuine article will still win out. Sure custom parts do come with a pro tune, but some brands of rifles don't need the full tilt pro tune to smooth them out. Not trying to ruffle your feathers Gene, but I don't see any justification in purchasing an over priced +$250 Gamo, and then selling out another $150 on a pro tune. That's $400 bucks into a rifle that will never re-coup its cost in re-sale value. It all goes back to the post Roger started a week ago. The Diana's and Beemans are by far a better investment. The cheap clones are a different story all together, and yes it's an economic alternative for sure. I was in agreement with what you stated about those "looking at the Gamo's and Crosmans".  Thomas

I"m in love with it!  The stock is just amazing.  I love the looks and the finish as well!

While I know that the Air Hawk "can" be made as good, after my experiences I'd rather have the real thing-even if it needs tuned.  I think that a tuned 34 would be something for certain that would last longer than we will.

Yes you are right to a certain extent Thomas, but you have to take into account that there are those folks whe would rather send their guns out for repair or to be tuned. Those folks do not want to do the service themselves..:) I have many customers who send me guns that they have had for years and want them fixed for one reason or another. We all have our own reasons for what we do and I do not think that we should discourage folks from having there guns tuned or tuning themselves. Like you I love to work on my own springers. but when it comes to my PCP's I send them to the pro tuner to be worked on...:) You may think that is wird but that is my choice..:) So I am sure there are many folks out there who own springers and PCP's that tune them theirselves and also send them out for tunes and repair.

Even though you are right so am I..:) So I guess that makes it even..:)

Gene...That is a real beauty! Love that stock. I really prefer wood over a synthetic. I also have the Pro rifle. However mine isn't the compact version but the full-sized rifle. You tuned mine for me a few months ago and you commented at the time what a smooth shooter it was! I surely agree with you. I noticed the difference immediately. My regret is that they don't release that model in a .22. I'm trying to make up my mind on which 22 to buy now. I have it narrowed down to  a couple but I sure wish the PRO was in there. Which leads me to ask: How difficult is it to install a recoil pad on the M34? If I've looked closely enough, they don't have a factory recoil pad on em. I'd like the 34 in a 22 caliber but wonder how it will shoulder without the pad.

Clip I have owned a couple of the RWS 34 originals with the stock with no pad. Personally I do not like a stock without a pad or even a plasic pad. They tend to slip and I am constantly re-sighting when I shoot targets. You can buy a later model 34 stock with pad from Umerex. They are pricy though. I have one here that is new that i replaced with one of Timmy's stocks.

How hard is the cocking effort with the short barrel?
