What color of stain?
« on: March 14, 2010, 05:18:42 AM »
I started to refinish the stock after remove the old dark stain and sanding I just can seem to get  all the old dark colored stain to come out. The reason I removethe old stain was because I really dislike the color on the tf99, my first thought was to go with a gunstock finish but with the uneven  color of the stock now it has made the choice a little harded. Does anyone have any other stain color to try?

there are so many to choose from, if you had the AG ( TF99 ) what natural stain would you put on it?

You might try what Joeblow recommended in another thread here ( http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/airguns/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=25336&mid=200423#M200423 ) - using one part bleach to eight parts zipstrip in order to lighten the color of the stripped stock.

I agree that you have a dilema - there are a lot of bad looking stock colors out there, and it's hard to know what the stain is going to look like without jumping in with both feet.  The reddish colors on the TF89 and its siblings certainly can be improved upon!  Hope someone can tell you what worked well for them.

I have heard you can use acetone to remove stain from wood.  You might try it on something else before hand.

I restore antiques and custom furniture, a product I commonly use is Oxalic Acid.  It can be purchased at most finishing stores.  Here is a link I found rather quickly on the net.  Make sure once you use and begin your soft sand were some sort of mask at least a nuisance mask.  This product will fix your color problem with out bleaching the wood white....Thanks!
