Just got my 350 Mag!
« on: March 15, 2010, 12:20:23 PM »
Well I was outside playing with the kids when the UPS guy showed up. I ran out front met him at the kirb adn snuck around the side of the house for the boat garage, my mangina. The woman usually smokes in the car garage so I peered around the corner and coast is clear. NOw the kids have spotted me though and my 10 yr old is pestering the crap outa me so she can go tell moma on me. Well I make it past the house and half way to the boat garge when I heard it, the sound of evil! My wife yelling "DAVID MYERS WHAT DID YOU BUY!"   So like any other man I took off running the last 15 yards to the garage and locked the door behind me.

I opened the box and laid the black plastic case on the work bench and it was like raiders of the lost ark when I opened the case. Sheer beauty! I broke out the RWS cleaning kit read through the direction for it and the gun. Looked the gun over real good and then went to break her open and clean the barrel. That was no joke! I looked it over twice and went through the direction manual again looking for some kind of locking mechanism. Then just bent it over the knee and let the man out. Wow that was stiff. It was really dirty in the bore. SHot it about 6 times then headed to the garage(shooting range) for the straight outa the box chrono.

JSB 8.4 gr avg 1066.2 fps 21.20 ft lbs
H&N Crow Mag 8.9 gr avg 1031.2 fps  21.01 ft lbs
CPHP 7.9 gr avg 1061.2 fps 19.75 ftlbs

I will test more later, mommas already mad dont want to spend all night playing with the new mistress and make things worse. lol

Out of box accuracy was nice. 1/4 groups with JSB and H&N crow Mag's, CPHP were close but just slightly bigger. All were hitting same area. CPHP bounced back and hit in the glass next to me. Was time to find new aiming point that one was full of lead.

5 more shots for poops and giggles and I was done. Happy as all get out. This rifle is NICE! I have read it really comes to life after about 1000 rounds. Well I cant wait for it to get better. Couple things about it. I am spoiled by the GRT trigger so this one was a little rougher and harder to pull but 100 times better than anyother stock trigger Ive pulled.  Keep the allen wrenches close. My professionally installed scope twisted after 7-10 shots. Then after about every 3-4 shot I tightened the screws a little. Will keep checking them for a while. This is no " lets go shoot cans at the creek all day" gun. Its a beast. Heavy and takes some effort to cock. This is deffinatly the " HOLY $^%* theres a heard of gorillas tearing the swing set apart" gun. So if your after 50lb squirrels that are shaking your kids down for their lunches at the bus stop, rampaging gorillas or charging mother inlaws this is the gun for you. This thing is exactly what I was looking for but If you want the all day lets go mess around gun Id stick with the lighter guns. I cannot wait for this weekend's swamp shooting session.

Congrats on the new shooter....  I have one of them in .22 in my collection and it is one of my favorite hunting rifles.   The 350 in .177 will benefit from heavier pellets.  Will be looking forward to your future posts on the gun  :)

I got my 350 magnum retrofitted with a Vortek Pro Guide 2 kit and it eliminated all spring torque.  It feels just like a gas ram and they've tested it where they left it cocked for 24 hours and when they shot it, it had the same velocity as if it was freshly cocked.

David Myers,  do you think you could be any happier???   I doubt it.    Now lets see how well you do shooting the 350.

Congrats on the new gun!  I loved mine at first, then I hated it, had it fixed by Umarex, and then loved it again.  My .22 likes the CPHP, but I think all of these magnum guns really like the Superdomes. Is it loud?  It is the one gun that I own that I don't like shooting when my neighbors are all home.  It isn't only the noise of the gun firing but the loud SMACK when it strikes the wood backdrop!

Man I know what you mean about the wife and the kids!  My wife doesn't even know how many I own.   You should have heard the comment about the new powderburner!  I told her though "honey this is a REAL" gun, not another air rifle" and she sorta understood.

After all the reading and comments on the PG2 spring set I am thinking of ordering it in case this dosent calm down enough. Right now it shoots great for as hard as it hits. Definate spring twang though.

Its not too loud, the first few shots were all supersonic, 1180's, those were of course loud and scared my son. That was the first time he had been out there when one went that fast. lol Once it settled in to the 1060 range it is not bad. I shoot in the garage or at the swamp so I dont have to worry about my neighbors too much.

And my wife came out in the garage when I was shooting it and asked how much it was. I laughed and said not as much as a coach purse. She kept naming prices and I just said nope till she quite. Then she asked what does it do that my others wont. I asked what does any of your 12 coach purses do that the others cant? Then she went off about how some are booney bird and some are coach some are blah blah blah. Then I asked again what do they do differntly? she put out her cigarette and went back in the house. lol

One question for all the guys that have the PG 2 spring kit. Did you lose any velocity when you installed it and if so how much? I dont want to lose alot of power especailly if I can dampen the spring with some grease.

Just Randy's personal advice after much trial and error with new guns-leave it alone for awhile :)  Let it get worn in some and see how it does.  Mine was so hard to cock at first I couldn't shoot it more than 50 times.  I also couldn't hit anything with it at first either then I got on this excellent forum.

David, congrats on your new purchase.....that RWS 350 Magnum is a real hard hitter.  I`m also thinking of getting one....maybe in .22 since it have so much power.  Maybe the heavier pellets will tame it down abit.

Congrads Dave. The more you shoot it the more you'll like it. Jeff made a good point on the heavier pellets. These shooters (in .177) seem to benefit alot from a heavier pellet. The Kodiaks/H&N Baracudas are about the best things shooting through my 350 clone. The lightest I can shoot without cracking the sound barrier is the heavy JSB's,...and they still crack off on occassion. Boy are you going to have a blast with that .177 jack-hammer!!!!!! tjk

Oh yeah baby!!! I knows the feelin!!! And I intercept at the driveway too, then go round back. But I have no kids so I usually succeed. Try the 10.5gr Crosman Premier Ultra Magnums too. Mine likes em.

And the purse/shoes thing is a great way to teach the womenfolk what the parralles are between their purchases and ours. The key thing is not to mock of course, but to just kind of illustrate the similarities between our purchases. That works pretty good for me (within reason).

I just installed the Vortek PG2 kit in my .22 cal. 350. I've never shot a gas piston rifle but my 350 now has a firing cycle the way I have heard the firing cycle of a gas piston described. Very quick, with no twang, twisting, or vibration. The recoil is still pretty hard, but that has to be expected of a springer with this kind of power. After around 25 shots I decided to set up the chrony. A 10 shot string with H&N Spitzkugal (Beeman Silver Sting) 15.74 grain pellet gave me an average of 784 fps, which translates to 21.5 FPE. This is only about 1 FPE less than the stock setup will typically give you. Although previously I had power tuned my rifle, which increased the power to 24 FPE. But the shot cycle was intolerable. I had decided before I bought the PG2 that if it made a major improvement in the firing cycle and gave me at least 20 FPE that I would be more than satisfied. And I am. Highly recommended.
