PrairieDog hunt gone down the hole, old post hehe
« on: April 13, 2007, 03:50:33 PM »
I'm going to try and tell you all about today's hunt without falling out of my chair LOL.This all started the day before with a co-worker, let's call him (Dirtclod shooter), Gene know's what I'm talking about hehe. Anyway my co-worker had purchased a CABELAS OUTFITTERS air rifle, it's a B26-2 clone and I'll give a review on it in the future. Well he come's over to my place friday and want's me to put it on the chrony so we head up to my shooting range and I fire up the chrony. I ask him what he want's to try and he open's up a tin of Crow Mag's. As he's holding it I reach in and grab one, something felt funny about the pellet. kinda rough but I assumed all was well and loaded it into the breakbarrel. I fired off the first shot, 830 fps hmmm grabbed another and it felt the same way loaded it and fired another shot, 840. Well as I reached into the tin I thought that I should take a glance at the pellet's in the tin, should have done this from the start. As I looked into the tin of pellet's I nearly fell from my chair. There inside with the pellet's were CLOD'S OF DIRT.!!!! What the H@#%& IS THIS S#@*^ !!! i ASKED. His reply, They fell out a couple time's so I scooped them back up and put them in. I just looked at the tin of pellet's with dirt clod's  and with dirt packed into the skirt's, I was speechless after my verbal outrage hehe. I grabbed the tin of dirtclod pellet's from him and dumped them into the TRASH.! I cleaned his barrel, schooled him on what you should not shoot including dirtclod's and loaded a Tomahawk in and the chrony jumped to 950 fps and leveled off around there.Day two we headed out to the Prairedog field's after work and I prayed to the airgun GOD'S that this day would make up for yesterday. As we pulled up there were prairiedog's everywhere, my hunting heart raced and this was dirtclod shooter's first hunt. I gave him some Tomahawk's in a tight tin and told him if he drop's them, shoot dirtclod's. I said that we should split up, hunker down watch your wind and crossfire, said another prayer to self.Well after about a half a hour the dog's started popping back up and I was already set up with the Shadow Sport, bipod leg's down and a Predator chambered. I crosshaired one at thirty yrd's and let it fly. The Predator hit em right above the left eye, he spune around and went into a death quiver, finished.! Again to my right at about twentyfive yard's another popped up, I had already chambered another Predator. I swung the gun over, set the crosshairs again......Two down. I took a break and just layed back basking in my hunt when I felt raindrop's on my face oh no rain on my baby. I got up and was headed to pick up my game when I heard distant yell's and shout's. Looking across the field at about a hundred yard's I see dirtclod running my way, airgun in one hand and his first kill in the other. I smiled to myself and hollered back, GREAT.! As he's running toward's me I'm watching him dodge dogholes when IT happen's. Dirtclod step's into a hole, airgun fly's, prairiedog fly's and dirtclod hit's the dirt.! I'M WATCHING ALL THIS IN DISBELIEF while the rain start's to come down. I run over and check out the damage as dirtclod scream's out, my ankle, my airgun. Running back to the truck I pull it out to him, load him, the gun's and game and head for the local Doc. I've got to end this story, it's been a long day. Dirtclod's ankle is broke, gun's got wet, well his I covered mine with my coat and got NO pic's to show for this hunt from HELL. His gun is ok after his tumble though. At least we got some PrairieDog's. How was everyone else's day . Ed

The only thing missing was a videocam. Dirtclod is home now with a doctor'ed up ankle and med's. I told him that I will be sending him a bill for my hunting and field medic services. He just laughed and bragged about his first kill until I reminded him of the pitfall's hehe of running through a prairiedog city, that shut him up LOL. Ed

There is a cloud with a silver lining here -- it sure made for a humorous story, lol.  Take this guy hunting again so we can enjoy more stories, hehe.

Hey Ed,,,, the hunter in me just has to ask,,,,, are those dogs resting comfortably in your freezer???

I recently read that American Indians used to enjoy eating prairie dogs.  The article I read stated that the Indians enjoyed the "earthy" flavor of the meat.  Did ya ever try em??

Hey Ed,
Still LMAO!  The only thing that would made this adventure any funnier, is if when he went down, his "1st kill" got up and took off!

Cheers,
-Doug

Hay Ed,

Your a brave man ! I never let a newbee hunter out of my sight, just never know what there going to do.

I got hit in the ass with two pellets of #7-1/2 shot, while in an outhouse, by a newbee, he shot at some bird flying across the back of the outhouse, two of the shot passed between the boards. I think he's still running !

But that was real good huntin and shootin by you Ed, shame you didn't get any picts.

Well fellow hunter's, dirtclod is doing better hehe. He is still bragging about is first kill and come to find out he had to shoot it twice. I inspected his kill and found two shot's from the Tomahawk's. Both in the lung area, but they did some nice damage. Jeff, I never processed  prairiedog before so I dropped them off at a meat processing store in town, a friend run's it. He tell's me that their really good baked and will give me some recipes when I pick them up. Dirtclod will be layed up for awhile, thank God so I will be doing what I do best, hunt alone hehe. I still wish that I had a camcorder for that, I can still see game and gun flying and dirtclod going down in a cloud of dust. LOL LOL LOL, sorry..............LOL. Ed
