"Recoiless" TF-89????
« on: March 21, 2010, 04:29:30 AM »
I recently got to shoot a .22 RWS 54 and loved it.  It was super accurate, easy to shoot, no hold-sensitivity, etc. but was a little lower power than my TF-89.  That got me to thinking.  After seeing pictures of how the 54 action is designed, why couldn't someone build a similar design for the TF-89?

I'm thinking of buying another stock and making a channel system that would bolt to the inside of the stock, similar to the channels on drawer slides.  A roller dolly would be built that would bolt onto the action.  You could use the steel ball/detent idea to secure the action in the forward position until firing.  The only question I'm pondering is what to do about the trigger.  Leave it attached to the action and slide with it or secure it to the stock and make some sort of extendable linkage that would allow the action to move but the trigger/guard would stay in place in the stock.

What do you think?  The only complaint I have of my TF-89 is the hold sensitivity.

Would it require to seperate actions to cock it and then set the recoiless action? The 54 uses the sidelever to push the action forward and cock it one one stroke. I don't know how you could get the action of the breaking of the barrel to push the action forward. If you leave the trigger attached to the action (which I believe would be the prefered method) you may have to enlarge the trigger guard slightly to fit your finger and allow for the blade to move rearward. I'm sure you could make this modification if you really tried, but why? If you want more recoilless power than a M54 go with a PCP(like a Disco or M-Rod).

Search on the Yellow. There is a YouTube link to a fellow who built a sledge conversion for his HW77. But I must ask, was there something wrong with the 54 you were shooting? They are one of the hottest .22 springers around. I'm surprised you felt it was shooting softer than your gun. Was it tuned down? And the 54 can handle the heavier pellets without a hitch.

I don't think there was anything wrong, except that it wasn't mine.  My buddy got it used and the seller said it was stock and only had a few hundred pellets through it.  It's condition suggests that is accurate.

We had the chrono out and my TF-89 was shooting H-points at around 800fps and the RWS 54 was about 760fps.  About 45*-50* out.

I'm just curious, as I'm a tinkerer and am looking for constructive input.

Well, it won't be easy. You might also look at some of the 10M sledge-actioned guns. Might be easier to do one of those than copy the 54's rail system. Even the Browning 800 pistol.

It isn't the same thing, but get the 89 tuned. That will smooth it out a LOT! I don't think mine are very hold sensitive and the .22 I have is a dreamboat. I've only got one better rifle, and it was twice the price -- about the same with a tune.
