I hope the zombie Starlings are not passing the dreaded disease to other animals but I think I ran into a zombie ground squirrel this weekend. I pulled up to the dairy and saw 2 squirrels out sunning themselves on the tire stack near the silage pits. I parked about 25 yards away and got out the binocs and stared glassing the tire pile. Within a few minutes I saw one poking his head of a tire to check to see if the coast was clear. I had a unobstructed shot at his head and a little of his neck, so I lined up the cross hairs on his head just below his ear and touched off the shot. I heard the sharp crack of the pellet finding its mark and watched in amazement as the impact literally spun the squirrel at least 2 feet in the air. I was even able to see a little blood be flung about during its flight.
After the shot I sat there quietly waiting to see if the second one was going to make an appearance. After about ten minutes I went to where I was sure I was going to find my first ground squirrel of the year. But upon arriving at the spot I didn’t see any squirrel, what I did find was copious amounts of blood scattered about on the ground. I checked all the near by holes to see if by some miracle hew was able to drag himself into one of them but there was no blood at any of the entrances. I tried my best to track him but there was really just one large area of blood with to trail leading away from it. Now given the fact that the only part of the squirrel I could see was his head and a little bit of his neck I would have thought anywhere I hit him with the B28 would have been instantly fatal but I guess not. So you guys with a lot of squirrel hunting experience tell me what you think, are we now dealing with zombie squirrels or do I need more gun?
