Boars
« on: March 23, 2010, 12:40:40 PM »

Hy guys,a friend of mine asked me to get him rid of few boars cos they're ruining the garden and coltures,I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted a shot with a .22 cal springer within 15-20 yards to an animal that weights 70-80 lb,what'd be the best shot placements?

Let me know cos these boars are a real pita,(should I consider the crossbow for a cleaner kill?)

Personally,,,, I'd rather see the cross bow used.   I just wouldn't feel confident using a .22 springer for an animal that size and that tough.  I wouldn't hesitate for a second if I was using my .22 Condor but with a springer ??  I think I'd pass on that....  just my opinion..

While I was waiting for your answers I already searched for a crossbow to buy,I already have an english longbow but I don't think 60 lb is enough for a boar, even at close range.

I would think that a 60 lb bow  shooting arrows tipped with appropriate hunting broadheads would be more than capable of taking down an 80 pound boar at 20 yards.  All my bowhunting is done for deer though so perhaps I'm mistaken.....

My experience in shooting Boars with a bow
« Reply #5 on: March 23, 2010, 02:17:34 PM »
I have shot several wild feral hogs with bow.  I think a springer is not enough gun.  I once tried to kill one with a 22 pistol and it almost got me before I took it down with a .308 rifle.  A bow of 60 lb is fine with an aluminum arrow and a strong tip. -- a word about what happens when you shoot a wild hog with a bow.  - unless you shoot them in the head or spine, they will run a ways.  How far depends on how good the hit is.  A heart shot will stop them faster than a lung shot.  There is a lot of grissle to protect the lung cavity.  Tracking a wounded hog through the brush in the dark is very dangerous.  I found that, with practice, I could hit them in the head at 20 yards from my tree stand with a 60 lb compound bow and drop them in their tracks.  With an aluminum arrow tipped with a Muzzy 130 grain broadhead, I could penetrate enough bone for a clean kill.  If you wound one, they often attack.

6o pounds is plenty if you hit the right spot ive bowhunted for years and a arrow in the rite spot will do the job.ive seen young adults kill russian wild boars over 100 ponds with less wieght.be confident with your equipment is the key .GOOD LUCK.

Yeah, a sixty pound bow would take them out.  I've got a 65 lb compound that will go a couple inches into an oak tree.  I didn't shoot it but my brother........:D

I've been investigating using bows in the suburbs, but the main problem with them and crossbows is if you don't hit them just right, they may run into someone's yard.  Or worse yet a wounded hog in someone's yard!

What I really think you need hunting in the suburbs is some sort of harpoon arrow or quarrel (don't laugh).  That way they can't run any further than your rope.  Just hook it to a good Warn winch and reel them in!  :)  That is how they hunt suburban alligators in Florida a lot of the time.  They use a harpoon and then pull them close enough to capture them.

Do not attempt it with a 22 cal springer. I know people who have taken down big deer with 22 cal powerful PCPs but a sub 1000 fps springer would just not do it.

Thanks guys, the Idea of using anarpoon with a strong line is not bad, maybe if Ican get closer to 10 yards I might use my spearfishing stuff with a stronger line.I'll taka a look at the boars today and then I'll let you know.

I have killed and trapped more wild hogs then the average joe,and have done so with everything from a .22 LR,to a .308.I wouldn't consider a .22 airgun up to the task under any condition.

I've taken to using a .243 when I shoot them from my window during the full moon nights. They wont come back around if alot of blood hits the ground from a previous kill.I was shooting them with my .308.With the .243 It leaves a small hole, little blood. They usually run 50 to 75 yards and pile up.When we trap them,we load them ont o mobile hog trailer, castrate the young males,or cull out a plump sow or two.(.22).Needless to say...we have ALOT of hogs in my part of the Fla.Panhandle..My brother-in-law shot one(50lbs) at 60yds with a .223 and watched it keep on keeping on...22 airguns have no business in the hog business.

I'm sorry. I'm laughing anyway. :D

I actually rather like the imagery. It has a sort of absurd efficiency about it. I actually think it might work, but you're going to want some pretty serious line.

Anyone who tries this, just promise me you'll never say, "Hey y'all, watch this!"

I live in Ky, and we know how many ideas that seem to make a lot of sense can to horribly wrong.
