Pic Posting Tutorial ???
« on: March 28, 2010, 02:52:27 AM »
I am not the most experienced person using a computer. I had to stumble through the process of resizing and posting pictures to the GTA by trial and error, but I finally got it figured out.

I was wondering if someone with more experience could create a tutorial that could then be made part of the Library where members could go to get step by step information to guide them through the process. I believe there will be a great increase in the number of pictures posted if a resource like this is made available. I bring this up, because I have noticed others saying that they are still trying to figure out the process themselves.  Thank you, snookman

This is a great idea, Wade. I'm about as computer-illiterate as a person can be. I need all the help I can get to perform some of the tasks needed on a computer. Posting pictures on our forum is something I've tried and failed several times. I'm reminded of an incident that happened to my wife a few years ago: Her fourth grade class ( she's a school teacher, retired after 25 years of teaching) had received new computers. These new desktops had been sitting in the classroom for nearly a month, still in boxes, awaiting the school tech to come around and assemble them. A couple of her students finally asked her if she'd like them to put 'em together for her. Her reply was "why not!" In a few minutes those students had 'em assembled, connected and running. The point of that story is...maybe I should find a few fourth graders to show me how to post photos on the site...LOL.

I have a real hard time explaining this kid of stuff...:) We do have one or two links in the GTA Library at the top for free simple picture programs. Should be pretty much straight forward.. I personally use Photo Shop and have for 20 years. A great program but a bit pricy just to resize pictures...:)

There's at least 2 ways to attach photos to your posts. If you have your photos hosted on another website, like Photobucket, open that web site, view your picture, highlight the web address from the internet address box, right mouse click it, copy and in your post here, right click and paste the link.

The preferred method is to just use the option at the bottom of the post entry box here that says "Attach a file after posting."Check that box and then submit. This will bring you to a page that asks you where the picture(s) is locatedthat you want to post. You need to know the location on your computer that you have stashed your pictures. Select a picture and hit submit. If your picture is okay, you will see a message that it was successfully added to your post. If it was too large, you will see a message stating you need to reduce the size of the file. You can go here[/i][/b] and use the free utility to resize you photos to try again. I have found that roughly 95dpi resolution for a 4x6 photo works most every time. Something in that range should work.

After you get a successful attachment, you can either go back to your post and view it or attach more photos to the same post. After you get them attached, you can even rearrange the order if needed by selecting the photo listed on the right side and clicking the up or down arrow. After you finish attaching and arranging your photos, just click on the return to your post and view it.

Let us know if this doesn't work for you and you still have issues. I'll revise the instructions as needed and then we can create a document for the library.

Happy Shooting...and posting!!!!

Thanks Gene and Dave  that is exactly what I was talking about. I hope it helps all the people on the forum. As brother Bentong always says.

You can link to your own album at GTA, too. There is an icon just for linking images if you have HTML enabled, without using a lot of HTML code.

I usually open a second Internet Explorertab for this. One for the post, and another to browse my photo album.

Go to your album, and open a picture. Right click on the picture (military right), and choose properties.

Swipe over and copy the URL (Ctrl-C).

Go back to your post (or start one), wherever you want to insert the pic, and click the insert image icon.

Paste (Ctrl-V) the URL. Add some title information.

Finish the post and submit.

Also remember that the GTA has a personal Photo Album Section. You can store all your photos there.

I use photobucket to host my pics... then I simply have to click the direct link and copy it... then come here and past it into the message...

Also as far as picture resizing goes..... you can click your picture and resize it IN the post a message box.... when you click on it it willl show some little boxes in each corner and sides grab one of the boxes and and drag it to make the picture bigger/smaller....

Edit: Think I will post some pics like dave did to show how to do it from photobucket.... may take me a day or two but I will :)thats a good tutorial dave!
