Removing grease before using a new Gamo
« on: June 29, 2006, 08:14:33 PM »
Hi all,

I remember reading somewhere in the instructions or safety manual to remove factory grease from my Hunter 440 before using it. There were some spots where the grease was obviously to be removed, but one spot I wasn't so sure about. The little tab/catch below the breech was covered with grease when I got it, but I thought that grease was needed so I didn't remove it. The gun worked fine, but I then "realized" that this was probably supposed to be removed too, so I cleaned it off. A little while after that the barrel began to stick and I had some trouble straightening it out after cocking it.

Can the stickiness be a result of my removing the grease?

Thanks!

OK. Thought so. What kind of grease should I put around there to replace it? Can I use some kind of grease available at a local hardware store/Walmart?

Most any type of grease is ok on the latch, just don't get carried away  like gamo did, just a thin film of lube is just right.
Give the barrel a real GOOD cleaning to get all the gunk out . A lot of guys use Goo Gone to clean barrels up, I have used it and it works quite well.

The rest of the parts sholud be lubed with molly lube, you can get molly 60 from a Honda Motorcycle shop, they use it for lubing suspension parts.
It kinda expensive from there, like 13 bucks or so, but it will last a lifetime of rifles.

Thanks for the info. I use Gamo oil on the parts that are supposed to be lubed regularly. Just have to get me some grease.

I cleaned the barrel before I started using the gun and take good care of the gun in general. I was mostly unsure about the latch lubrication.

Thanks again!
