How much offset?
« on: March 30, 2010, 11:49:26 PM »
I shoot a lot in my indoor range at 13 yards. I hunt once a week. I really have no way of r zeroing at 20-30 yards every time i want tio hunt. If im dialed in at 13 ans shoot 7.9 grain pellets at 850 FPS where am i hitting at 30 yards?

I think you wil have to use a calculator to get an idea.

I used Chairgun to figure this out. Using Crosman Premier lites, 850fps and the scope height of 1.75 in. If your 1st zero is 13 yards you'd be .85 inches high at 30 yards and dead on again at 45 yards. Of course you'd want to actually verify this by shooting your pellets at the distance to account for any variables. Usually Chairgun is pretty close though.

Thanks for the info. I'll aim a little low from 20-30.

My Gamo hunter shoots 8.4 gr JSB at 920 and hits 3/4 mil dot low at 35ft. I am centered at 25 yards. My RWS 350 sends 10.65 gr H&N at 960's and is centered at 25 but hits about 1 in low at 15 yards.

When it came to POI at 25 yards I had to actually shoot at that range. I was lining everything up at 35 ft in the garage and did all my chrono testing. Picked the best pellets in there then went back to the swamp where i can stratch it out an dthe pellets were all over at that range. I went from 1/4 in groups in the garage to 2-6 in in the feild depending on the pellets.  Ended up going with the #3 and #4 pellets in the garage testing because they held up in the feild better. And accuracy will always outshine power, and artilary round 1/2 mile away wont kill anything but a nicely placed round between the eyes gets it done everytime. Now my #4 pick in garage testing is the #1 go to pellet. Sacraficed a little velocity for alot of accuracy.

What I do is shoot outdoors and zero at 30 or 50 yards distances (Depending on airgun) and then shoot indoors in my 8 meters distance basement.  In the basement shooting off a rest I can usually get a 1/4" group with 10 shots....and it'll be below the Point of Aim.  I'll measure the distance of the group to the "dot" and write it down somewhere.

Then I'll adjust the scope turrets for the indoor target shooting....usually 20+ something clicks up and 8 or a dozen clicks windage.  Write those numbers down and shoot.  After the session, if I want the scope to be back at the 30 or 50 yards setting I just adjust the scope's turrets again.  Fire a few shots to see if the Point of Impact on the paper is the same as before and I'm good to go.
