Help with Teardown of my 440 Hunter
« on: April 18, 2007, 04:40:39 AM »
Well, as you guys have all done a great job helping me understand how to master my 440 Hunter for scope mounting and shooting techniques for a springer.  I have a trigger coming from CDT this week so I thought it would be a perfect time to tear it down, clean and tune.  I have about 500 rounds through it so the cylinder should be indicating any wear marks etc.  So before I begin I wanted to know if the preload of the spring requires the cylinder to be in a load fixture before removing the spring guide pin as I don’t want the guide shooting out the garage door into the neighbor’s living room.  Also, what are the recommended lubes, how much, and where to put em.

Getting excited so let me know:)

Thanks, Tom

The spring has....

...about 2" of preload, which translates into about 60-65 lbs of force.

I don't have much trouble taking them apart and putting them together without a compressor, but that's me. You should be able to figure out if you'll be able to handle the required force...

Thanks guys for the help.  I checked out CDT site for care of the Gamo and it has excellent advice on exterior lubes.  When I take it down I want to clean, debur and re-lube the inside, so any help on what lubes and where to put them would really help.

Thanks again, Tom

Hi, Tom. Got a lube kit from "Rich from Mich" ( Don't think he posts here any more)when I did my Shadow 1000, Only $8.00 with enough left over to do it a few times again. And instructions. Check out the Mods and Tunes  and The Shop forums for an account of what I did(Finally got the S1K apart). There's a lot of info from other members, including CDT . Just be careful not to drop the cocking roller when you pull the stock. If you look in the slot on the bottom of the stock, you'll see it on the cocking linkage. When you get it all apart, look for burrs  on the holes for the guide pin in the back of the action, then on the trigger mechanism, you;ll see the stamping marks where everything latches. As said in other threads, "get an emery board from your wife/girlfriend and polish out the areas that slide/touch". I used a piece of folded 400grit wetordry sandpaper to do this . I did make a spring compressor which made it simple and safe. Many designs out there. Check out CDT, Rich from Mich, or the Kermit Texas Airgun Club( under projects) for plans or a compressor. Once I got it apart,I was amazed at how simple the whole thing is. Didn't do as good a job a a Pro tune, but it really made a difference! Have fun!

Most excellent:) for all the advice and link to the Bob's self tune details.  As I love to build tooling it's off to the hardware store for materials to make a spring compressor.

PS If anyone is looking for the Moly 60 paste it's standard issue at your local Honda motorcycle shop, but you guys probably already know that:)

Thanks again, Tom
