Cleaning up
« on: April 04, 2010, 09:54:01 AM »
The last string of winter storms that came up the East Coast hit the part of Western NC where I have a mountain home with a very damaging ice storm.  There are literally hundreds of downed trees, and about 90% of all the big trees have limbs down and tops broken out.  Fortunately, none of the trees down on my property damaged the house.  I spent a good part of this Easter weekend cleaning up the property.  This after paying to have a tree service cut down the badly damaged trees and dangerous  hanging "widow makers", clear the drive, and run all the smaller stuff through a chipper.  I was left with about 8 or 10 stacks of partially cut up tree trunks along side the drive up to my place.  This is what I accomplished with a chain saw, a power splitter, a 4-wheeler, and a small trailer this weekend.  All of it is oak.

Wow, Tommy. Two full cords, I'd call that. That's a lot of wood to haul and stack. Did Tony come up to help? Wish I could have given you a hand.

I agree with your estimate of the damage. I figure you must have had a cloud pass over with all the exposed trees cold enough to condense and freeze. Sad to see so much damage to the treetops. You look out the deck and see most of the trees as far as you can see topped out and broken. It will take years to recover all that growth, and there is so much deadfall in the forest.

Nope.  Just me.  And all the dead wood and gnarly stuff that wouldn't split has been hauled down to the dump site.  The crazy thing is that if I wanted to, I could have gotten twice that much and maybe more just between the well house and the turn off from the old CCC road.  It is just a shame how much good hardwood is going to rot on the ground.

Well, if Timmy needs wood, I know where he can find lots of it.  Does he have a kiln?  The wood would have to be cut and kiln dried for, what, months, before it would be suitable?

Hey Ed.  I would love to get up to see you. Thought about it this weekend, but it was a family weekend, and just didn't work out.  Understand you will be there a couple of weeks.  Maybe next weekend I can get up that way.  What I would really love is to have you and Gene come up to the mountain place and have a look.
