REX 3-9x40 AO Review
« on: April 20, 2007, 02:41:50 AM »
I recieved this scope the other day from Pyramid Air. The price is VERY Reasonable for the scope that I got. BUT, it was a mistake. I ordered the $62.99 special that came with 11mm rings and no Illuminated Reticle. They were out of the scope I ordered and they sent me this one to make up for it. The website also lists the scope that I recieved at $99.99 .

It's a REX 3-9x40 AO with Illuminated Duplex/Mil-Dot Reticle.

At first look, the scope seems well made. It's not as heavy as the comparable Leapers scope. Optics are nice & clear through all magnification levels. Nice crisp bright image. No fuzzy edges to speak of.  Only a slight dimming of the image at max magnification. The Crosshairs are nice & thin with small Mil-Dots. The AO adjustment is on the objective bell and operates smoothly. It focuses from 10 yards out to infinity. Pretty much standard for any airgun scope.

Eye relief is surprisingly long! Even at the higher magnification levels. I estimate the eye relief (based on where it's mounted on my rifle) at 4-4.5 inches.

The Illuminated Reticle is nice, especially in dark cover where cross hairs normally disappear. The IR has a rheostat with 11 settings for brightness. I tested this in a pitch black room, and even though there's 11 settings, it seems as if there's only 5. The light levels between the 5 discernable brightness levels are not noticable. At least to me they aren't.

The windage & elevation adjustments are what I DON'T like. They're NOT target turrets and have to be adjusted with a Dime or a stubby screwdriver. But the click detents are positive and seem to hold well. Click adjustments are also pretty accurate.

Over all, the scope is well worth the $62.99  I paid for it. I say it's worth the $99.99 Price Tag that they have on it as well.
I believe this scope is comparable to a  Bushnell or Tasco in the $150-200  range. DEFINITLY Better than the BSA Air Rifle Scopes.

Great review Sam,

I would never thought of buying this scope if you hadn't written a review on it, I just don't trust many new names out there.

By the way, what are click adjustment ? 1" at 100 yards or 1/4" ?

Real GOOD review Sam,

The clicks are 1/4" at 100 yards. I'd stay away from anything with 1" click adjustments! LoL

After doing some more research, it turns out that these scopes are Barska scopes under a different brand mark. They're made at the same plant in China. But to be honest with you, I like this scope ALLOT better than the Barfska that I have.

I found this info out from a guy who went to the SHOT Show and talked with a REX Representative at their table. Seems that they're fairly new, and just introduced about 2 months ago or so.

Another look at this scope...

Well, I'm not sure if it's me but I think there's something wrong with it. I though it just needed a Fine Tuning of the Eye Piece focus, but that wasn't the case.

It seems to have the same Leapers "Fish Eye" thing going on. After over 2 hours of fiddling with it, I got it to go away a little bit. But it's still there... I've had it on my Talon since I recieved it and it never fails to hit it's mark, but the Fish Eye is getting kind of annoying.

I think this one's going back to Rex. That is unless someone wants to trade me for a Tech Force 3-8X40 AO  :D\

I've got a Tasco Target/Varmint 6-24x42 AO Mil-Dot on the Talon now, but I think it's a bit TOO Much scope for this gun.
