More RWS 48 177 Questions
« on: April 08, 2010, 03:53:41 AM »
Since the 48 is already known to be of good German Quality, will I be able to use heavier pellets ( from 9 grains and up) without damage to the rifle? The ad at Pyramid Air states to be sure to use heavier pellets when field target shooting. So it has been implied that the rifle is heavy duty. However, I will take the advice of the GTA forum over a Pyramid Air ad any day.

Also, will I be able to open the breech slightly and load a pellet close it back up without actually cocking the gun? Not important, but would be convenient for me.

I like the RWS 48 because it has an ambidextrous stock. I'm a lefty, and of course a right handed stock is a turn off for me. Otherwise, some of the high quality under lever Air Arms and Beeman rifles would appeal to me as well if they were available left handed and without the price hike.

Ordering one before the end of the month.

You can shoot heavier pellets in the gun...no problem. I have never shot a 48/52  but, I don't think you can load a pellet w/o cocking the gun. The 48/52 are really nice guns, they are big and heavy. So, if you are planning to take it for an all day hunt, be prepared. What type of shooting are you going to do?

stay at that range of 9 grain u could use the crossman premier heavies but not for to long of that usage .I had a rws48.22 and i kept it at 12 grain to 16grain at times i would go 18.1 but that would be everyday nor would it had been consistant ,however a pcp could tolerate that type of grain and a gas ram also could tolerate it .never believe the velocity in airguns from the saying of a company or box cause they r tested with much lower grains that will have problems with time ,thats why i think people be havin problems with springers when purchased cause at the factory there testing them then put them back on the shelf ...stay within the limits. In case u would want a higher priced airrifle im gonna give u some 2 cents of advice. There is a man from flying dragons airguns that his name is mike mileck aka=mikeiniowa is what he goes under in this website .Mike carries a selection of great clones of higher priced airrifles like a beeman r9 is a b26 ,rws48 is a b28,tx200 is a b40 a rws34 is a b25 and sells them tuned also and great prices not only price but the quility is amazing i have a few from him and wont sell them ,hes in the china gate and thats where his brand be spoken about so before spending 600 to 800 speak with the members and put up a thread in the china gate on any b line topic .I really hope this would help ....joge

The RWS 48 and its family (52 and 54) are all magnum air rifles, they shoot among the hardest springers and I believe that relatively heavy pellets are suitable for these kinds of rifles.  I noticed some shooters in this forum do not believe that using too light or too heavy pellets can damage your rifle but I do.  I have RWS 48 in 0.22 caliber and I only shoot relativly heavy pellets through it (16 gr) while at the same time I shoot 14.3 gr in my Beeman R-9 in the same caliber.

Why do you want to barely open the breech and load a pellet without cocking the rfile?  I would not do that.  Cock the rifle fully, load a pellet, and shoot.  Do not cock or load a springer if you do not intend to shoot.

I too like my RWS 48.  It is very accuarte and powerful.  They do not required a lot of maintenance, just basic care and they will last for a long time.

Yes you can shoot up to 10 gn pellets with the 48 and 52. They are the same gun with exception of the stocks. The 52 has checkering where the 48 is a plain stock. The power plants are exactly the same are of excellent German quality. The RWS 54  has a completly differen power plant as far as the action and associated parts. These are great guns but heavy..:)
THE ONES I SLEEP WITH: BSA Lightning XL, AA TX-200, AA ProSport, BSA Ultra, HW-97K, Crosman NPSS .177, FX Cyclone, HW-30 Nicle Plated, AA-S200, Crosman Marauder, CZ-634, R-9 DG, Webley/Scott UK Tomahawk, Benji Kantana, Benji Marauder, Benji Discovery.....

I have a Diana/rws 52 and have tried at least 20 different pellets and discovered that Beeman FTS 8.8gr/ rws supermag 9.3gr if up closer targets/ JSB Match Diabolo Exact .177 Cal  8.4 gr in that order work best :)  I sometimes use CP heavy 10.5gr out in the field but find the beeman  FTS to still be my favorite. Not all aiguns like the same pellets but this might be a good weight range and starting point:)
BTW  my typical goal is to find the "most accurate pellet " and use it.  Not sure what I would do if I ever found a too light or too heavy pellet that was the most accurate ..I have not had this happen yet but maybe i would just  go with accuracy and deal with replacing springs and seals as required!?

Larry, the 48 is a gun built to shoot heavier pellets it will not hurt the gun and yes you can lock open the breech and load a pellet without cocking the rifle and close it untill your ready to cock and fire it, this save you time if you need to shoot fast on game! These are a good Greman quality gun I've had a few and still have one in .22cal and I think the .22cal is the way to go in this power plant over the .177cal JMHO.

Larry, IMHO if it fits in the breech, shoot it, thats my feelings about the pellet weight issue. Your spring and piston seal will degrade in performance, like shocks in your car. Eventually you will replace them, so is the same with the spring and piston seal. Oh, almost forgot one more item that will go is your breech seal. All of these parts can be obtained and replaced easily. I have a Model 48 in .177cal and I shoot mostly pellets over 9.00gr, mostly to slow it down. Keeping it around 900fps for meits more accurate. Enjoy your rifle Larry and keep shooting. Shoot Safe and Enjoy.....Bill

Larry,

My 48 likes CPHs the best so that is what I feed her.  Loud but super accurate.  I'd say as accurate as my TX but the trigger is nowhere near the TX but then nothing else is.

I think anything lighter like CPLs go supersonic.
