it is because the pellet weight is up over 14grain i chronyed my b26 .177 the other day and with 7.9 it was 900 -920 and with 8.64 it was down to 840-850 and with 10.6 it was down to 700-720 so it sounds about right to me.

My 26's are shooting at high 14 fpe.  About 650 with .22 14.5 Superdomes and 850 with .177 9.4 Supermags.  My TX shoots at mid 15 FPE or 940ish with .177 7.9 CPLs.  I don't know if the B40 shoots the same but that would be low 700s with a 14.5gr pellet.

OK here's the real dope, with special made delrin pellets they all will shoot around 1700 fps with a drop of fuel behind them.....can't hit the side of the barn but what the heck....b-26 call it 650 normal pellets, B-40 700 .22, 800 .177 may be a bit low but don't want to get the old hopes up them have them shattered...accurate matters the heck with speed..........

Thank you jeff i had to make a decision cause not to many people want to part with there npss or np.This b40.22 airrifle would be a great experince,i have had heavy airrifles and still have them and to be honest a like the balance and the less of a hold on the magnum springers if done right u will score on your target.I have heard many great things from the b40, that has me bought ill keep the grains of pellets from 13.0 to 14.5 which r the rws and cph and cpl thats it ....jorge

the b26 in .177 after over 2000 shots: gamo hunter 900, jsb 8.4 870, cp 7.9 880. the b26 in .22 broken in with hobbies 11.9 758, with crosman premieres 14.3 735, daisy wadcutters (best groups) 14.3 740.
the b40 after 4000+ shots averages 940 with cphp 7.9. I dont remember the others, since it puts these in a ragged hole at 35+ yards. The b40 in .22 shoots 720 with crosman premieres 14.3. All these numbers are close to the 50 shot strings average shot with every rifle.
Best of all 4 as a all around rifle: B40 .22
