My first spring tune B26
« on: April 10, 2010, 10:05:05 AM »
i adventured into my first springer tune today i have been taking alot of notes from all the great airgunners on this forum and decided to give it a try so last week i ordered a JM spring (E9870) seal (Apex small) the springer lube kit and some old school buttons. everything arrived in no time at all "JM is the best" i tore it down this morning and made a few measurements and started fabricating delrin spring guides for the new spring. the b-26 does not have a front spring seat guide at least mine didn't and by design would appear to transfer alot spring twang, vibration or such directly to the piston so i made a guide to sleeve the inner rod and give the spring a nice seat. the rear guide was made to only leave 1/6 inch between the two guide ends when cocked, i polished the spring ends and buttoned the piston to take out some slop in the chamber( sorry i was having so much fun i forget to photo the piston with the buttons so that people who didnt' know like me will understand). so how did it all go "WOW" is all i can say, if i did not know better i wouldn't believe there was a spring in there apsolutly no twang, buzz, zip, zap nothing. i took it out to the range and shoot it all afternoon i can't say it was shooting the best groups but wasn't bad,  i could not put the gun down it was such a pleasure to shoot.i am sure the groups will get better as it breaks in and i would like to thank everyone here for all the great info. please if you know of or see something in the pics or left out don't hesitate to point it out this is my first but not last my cfx is next "going back to the spring".i will chrony the b-26 and post results when it arrives.

Congratulations on first tuning experience Shady816! Awesome experience, isn't it? Hehehe. If you want some more "playing" space on your top hat and rear spring guide you can use a shorter but stiffer spring like the Crosman Quest spring. You've done a good job making a long stemmed top hat. That should take care of the twang well. Next thing you need to do is to tweak the trigger assembly. Just watch out for those nasty small springs inside. Hahaha! Good Job, bro'! :)

Thanks Gene.....i will post some more pics of targets groupings at different ranges as well as some chrony numbers soon as for pellets since day one of ownership even thru the first break-in she always loves H&N Field Target Trophy 8.64 domes and the close second would be rws superdomes 8.3.

Great work Shady. I have a few questions.
Is that the small diameter compression tube B26?
How did the new spring compare in size to the old spring?
Did you do any chrony tests?
Did you need to mil down the seal?
Lastly, can I buy a couple of sets of spring guides from you if this is the small chamber version?  ;0)

give me an example of a small chamber version this is my only b26 so i would not know the difference and i sized everything from the piston seal to the guides the spring is the e9870 i want to say it was 13" but not possitive it was most definately longer than the stock spring and i would have no problem fabing you some guides if i had some measurements. chrony numbers will come when it arrives but i will say i have a 55 gallon plastic drum and none of my guns would penitrate it at ten yards but the b26 after tune when clean thru one side. my gun is fairly new and the apex small seal did not require but just a touch to get a one thousands over compresion chamber i want to say it is the large chamber version i thought i read somewhere all new ones were.

Both mine are small from what Mike Melick says. I don't have any Micrometers but I have a tape measure or an old seal I could send.

to fab the guides I would pretty much need the gun less the stock for I would need alot of inside measurements spring, tube ,piston etc. and the seal sizing can be done fairly easy I'm sure you could handle that it's up to you if I had it all in front of me I could fab it all and button the piston and send it all back for you to take the joy in assembly. and a update on my b26 today her groups are still holding around 1 inch at 30 yards and still likes the pellets she liked yesterday and for the first time in a long time I was hitting my 100 yard can consistently. so it is up to you if you want to cover shipping both ways I have plenty of delrin and will be actually turning out some for my self this weekend.pm me let me know.

Shady,

That sounds great. But I have to hold off until after the 10th of next month now. Had an unexpected bill that ate up my gun funds. I am assuming that since both my guns are the same you would only need one to fab the parts up, and I could apply the mod once it arrives?
