Might be a silly question
« on: April 13, 2010, 04:03:10 AM »
I know there is a difference in the insides of a TF 89 and a 99, but what about the relative power of each one?  I don't own a chrony, but I was just curious if anyone knew if they were approximately the same FPS.

well, not exactly. The numbers Mark gave are nearly 3 fpe apart, and that's about right. A stock 89 will do 19-20 fpe, occasionally 21. I'm not quite so sure about the 99, but 17-18 fpe seems to be the norm.

After a TurboTune type tune is a completely different story. The 99's might get up to 19 fpe, but some of the 89's (but by no means all) turn into 350 mag's with a red stain :D (just what is Gene stuffing into them, anyway?)

I'm not sure what the differences are inernally, but I'm under the impression that the 99 might have a shorter piston stroke. (Again, not sure on that one).

also the 99 has a leather piston seal the 89 is synthetic piston seal, the piston in the 99 is stamped steel and rolled into shape the internals in the 99 are completely different compared to the 89 as far as quality and design, my brother loves his 99 but he knows its not as well made as the 89 but we've done alot of work on the rifle to make it shoot as good as it does and thier is still further work that can be done to his to make it a better rifle, the one he has is very accurate with the Peak 13.9gr pellets. thiers not much you can do with the triggers in these gun accept polish the parts not much in the way of adjustment.

Personally, I like both rifles.  I've never owned an underlever so it may be novelty.  However, it is very accurate.  Jaymo fixed it up before he sold it to me.  Compasseco put it back together after I messed up the trigger and put in a new seal for me.

My 89 like the SuperDomes!  The 99 doesn't seem to care what you put through it, but it likes the RWS the best too.  I was just wondering for the hunting aspect if they were comparable on power.  I'd say for what I shoot at they are close enough.  I just didn't want to find out that the 99 is too low on the power scale to shoot raccoons and possums.

I've got to say for the money you can't beat the TF guns.  I'm so happy with mine.  I have several air guns and with the a little TLC these guns are just super nice for the money.  Whenever Gene gets ready I'm going to send my 89 off for a supertune.  I don't know if it needs it, but I'm more curious than anything else on how it can be improved beyond my home stuff.

well I can do at home what Gene can do and I just get the right parts from people who will sell them and the rest of the tune is easy with the proper tools and the knowledge and know how!
