Has anyone used a large PB cylinder for fills in the field?
« on: April 13, 2010, 05:49:08 PM »
Please, constructive input only.  I'm content for now pumping up my 850 after a shooting session.  A SCUBA tank is out as there aren't any dive shops within a 1 hour+ drive.  I'm looking to purchase a 90/91 cubic inch 4500# carbon fiber paintball cylinder to use to refill my 850 while in the field (camping, road trips, etc).  This size of tank should yield 5 complete fills to 3000# in my 22ci gun cylinder.  I will be building a booster to get air to 4500#.  The only problem I'm having before buying a tank is what type of valve to use.  There are multiple options I'm considering.

1.  This looks like a good option.  Rated for 4500# use and has a paintball fill fitting.  The add says it fits standard dive tank threads but when I e-mailed them, the seller said this has 29/32"-14 threads!?!?!?  I'll have to ask again.  Paintball tank threads are 5/8"-14 and standard SCUBA is 3/4"-14.  I could retap the paintball cylinder.  $37 shipped.

2.  This would just screw onto the regulator of the 4500# tank.  The knob depresses the pin valve in the regulator allowing air to flow.  If you took the guts out of the regulator but left the pin valve in, this valve would see 4500# for a short time.  The material looks thick and I'm guessing it would hold but that makes me nervous.  I'd get a 5000# rated whip hose & Q.D.

3.  Same as last valve but get the regulator to put out 3000#.   That way the valve would only see 3000#.

4.  Get a SCUBA valve and fill assembly, like the two links.  This would requiring retapping the tank to fit the SCUBA threads.

hi..
fitting 1 screws into a scuba tank  valve "that fitting is manly used for twin
dive tank set ups"..will not screw into a paint ball/Hpa size tank neck...

No 4..the scuba tank valve will not fit a paint ball/HPA tank....
the thread is way to big in Dia...

Talk to your paintball guys. See where they get their large tanks - The 200 CuFt ones that they fill the little bottles from.$ 45 from a weld shop once a year wouldn't be too bad.   Ask your local FD, If you're in a small town they may be helpful and fill a SCBA tank once a month or so.If they seem helpful make sure your bottle is the same as theirs.  Also with the paint ball guys someone may own a compressor? Maybe get a paintball - airgun club started and everyone chips in for a compressor?  A $3000 compressor devided by 20 guys is only $150 each.

Just my $.02
