Anyone ever seen this before?

Last week I was taking down cowbirds in the tree across from the driveway - I nailed one & it fluttered, but got stuck in the tree. I hit it again to try to knock it out of the tree, but it just did a flip & then must have gotten caught up by the beak. Anyway, so it's dead as a hammer right up there in the tree, and it's sitting perfectly upright and looks like it's ready to fly. (But it ain't goin' nowhere - HAH!) Now for the next part - it's buddies start showin' up & sittin' right next to him off & on for the next 2 or 3 days. He made an excellent decoy until the wind finally brought him down!

I've had critters get hung up in trees before but not in that position.  You couldn't ask for a more life like decoy

Yes! I've seen almost the exact same thing, just without any airgun involvment.

 I once saw a crow sitting on a branch alone in a tree. Then saw it again in the exact same place later in the day with some pals in the tree. Then again alone in the exact same place that night. Come the next day, there it was, so I watched it with some binocs and realized it was dead but somehow stuck perfectly upright! When I came back to point it out to someone that evening it was gone. He almost didn't believe me, but then he spotted some black feathers and a leg beneath the tree and we came to the conclusion that it had finally fallen out of the tree and become food for one the cats roaming the neighborhood.

I shot a grakle that flew just around the corner of the house then died and when I walked back there his buddies were hanging out by him. So I picked it up and threw him down behind the boat garage and sure enough his buddies swooped in shortly there after. So I sat there and picked them off leaving the dead ones as decoys and they always returned pretty quick. It works very well.

In a park here in Florida I have, in the past, come upon both a cedar waxwing and a male cardinal that were both dead and sitting in the lower branch as if they were still alive.  I didn't know they were even dead until I walked right up to it and they were both stiff and grasping the branch, as if they were just sitting there.

This happened on 2 separate occasions.
