Shadow Express
« on: April 14, 2010, 09:18:01 PM »
I was considering buying this combo. What is everyones opinion on it as a rifle and an air shotgun? Is the rifle accurate and can the shot gun take out small birds within 30ft or so?
Thanks

Hey Steve and Welcome to GTA:) I do not concider the air shot gun to accurate and if not mistaken it has a smooth bore,  IMO not suited to accuracy. I also believe Gamo have now change to a new and not so good trigger system so if you buy a gamo make sure you get an older model and you could use a GRT111 trigger:)  I have a Gamo Shadow sport and love it, Tony
BTW  not sure of your budget ?  I am a Diana RWS 34 fan and I would recomend .22 if hunting maybe something like this  http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&brand=RW&prodID=RW2166023&prodTitle=RWS%20MODEL%2034%20PANTHER%20.22

Welcome to the GTA! I have one and have gotten Tree Rats at up to 20ft or so and a sparrow at maybe 45 ft with shot shells, 11 chippers at 10 to 30 ft most with shot shells, mice and moles one with a predator the others shot shells  at 10 to 20 ft, its definitely a short range gun

Steve, welcome to GTA,nice to have you here with us.

I don't own one of those guns but I have read quite a few reviews on it and while a few of them were positive the majority of them were not.   Personally I think you'd be better of with a different rifle. I'm sure some of the other members will chime in with their advice.  Again, Welcome and I'll be looking forward to your future posts...

I have a viper express that I picked up last spring...thought the concept of the short range shot shell would work on chipmunks since I live on 3/4 plus wooded acres in a subdivison.
Last summer I killed 12-15 chippers with it within 20 t0 30 feet. longest shot was a running chipmunk at about 15 yards that required a followup shot. AT the time I had no real idea of the vast number of quality air guns until I found the GTA and Yellow Forum.......the viper got me hooked and I am now ready to upgrade into the big boy arena

I have been out of work since November and have had plenty of time to tinker with the .22 pellets. The shot gun site is ok and you can hit paper or cans but has no real zero on pattern.Iwent from a laser site to a cheap Gamo scope from Walmart and have found that RWS SUPER H POINTS & PRED POLY are very accurate out to 15 yards any thing beyond say 20 to 30 has yet to be determined. I will tell you that with the scope I killed a squirrell at 23 yards aimed at eye and bingo bellet went in eye and out its ear with the RWS.
I have shot a 2x6 at 25 yards and the Pred went in 1/4 inch. Call me crazy but I have thought about a tune and  Charlie Trigger for it!

Anyway thats my 2 cents worth I am no expert only a extreme rookie and am looking forward into buying a Trail xl and a Bsa Lonestar this next year.
