I wonder if a boot has ever slipped off and gone flying into the crowd? Why do so many countries like goose stepping and other military "high jinks"? (Especially goose stepping. Never could figure why the Soviet dress units continued that, given their history with A. Hitler & Co.)

Actually on both counts there - it's probably more related to the British during their colonial time there. While they didn't actually Goose Step, - they did a lot of stamping/strutting & quick 90* turns. These armies may have enhanced it a tad. ...

You could see the similarity in they’re marching techniques. The exagerated arm and leg movements were nearly identical. I would bet that they both can trace that back to British Military Drill and Ceremony. Actually quite a impress military display, they’re Soldiers are quite professional in their ceremonial events.
