My complete review on my RWS 48(refurb) with pics
« on: April 15, 2010, 04:14:53 PM »
Well I got the RWS 48 today.
I didnt have alot of range to shoot so I went in the basement and set up my target at 19 yards. I was pleased with the shot cycle of the gun, there was no twangyness at all it was pretty much a solid thunk. The trigger wasnt bad either. It pulled clean and crisp every time. I tried a variety of pellets over the chrony and target.
I wasnt so happy with the power of the gun though. It is a factory refurb and the guy i got it from says less than 100 down the tube so I expect the power to go up some as she settles in. But if I want power I'm grabbing the B51 and with 40+ fpe I am set. But for backyard plinking and smallgame(squirrels, crows,Starlings and pests) this gun is just fine. I have a Baraska 3-12 x 40 AO scope with mil dots but plan to upgrade to an Eclipse or Sidewinder as soon as I save up some more cash.
Now for the Stuff all you guys wanna know
Chrony strings
CP'S 14.3 grains
Avg 698 with a spread of 3 fps over 10 shots FPE 15.5

Predator Polymags 16 gr.
Avg 637 with a spread of 4 fps over 10 shots FPE 14.3

HN Barracuda 21.1
Avg of 511 , Spread of 5 FPE 12.1

Crowmags 18.1 Gr
Avg of 558 Spread of 3 FPE 12.6

Dynamic Airbullets TM2's 17 Gr Leadfree
Avg 607 spread of 4 FPE 13.8

and for accuracy heres the CTC sizes
CP'S  .400"
Polymags  .470"
Barracuda  .637"
Crowmags .718"
Dynamics were the winner by a smidgen with .327"
all shots were taken at 19 yards using my Knee as a rest and scope set at 6 power
I will do some more testing at longer ranges next week when the weather clears back up
Overall I like the gun and will be even happier when the power comes up a bit I'd like to see upper Teens on FPE
heres the pics

Those numbers do seem low...

The 48 is considered a magnum by most people, it should be doing closer to 20 fpe.  Diana rifles are notorious for shipping bone dry from the factory, and shooting them that way for long can do some damage.  You'll need to open her up to lube it, and YES, you do need a spring compressor.  Doesn't need to be fancy or expensive, here's what I use:

Takes a little finesse, but this has taken apart lots of springers, including a Diana 350.  It's a standard Pony pipe clamp, I think they're around $15 at any Big Box store.  The screw is a little short for the long stoke guns, but it still takes enough of the pressure off that you can finish removing the spring by hand.

Might as well have parts on hand before taking it apart, at the minimum, you'll need a new piston seal, lubes, and perhaps a tune kit.  I've used both Macarri and Vortek kits, and I like both.  Price is about the same either way, total will be around $100.  Or you can send it out for a tune, depending on who you pick and what you want done, that can run from around $100 to as much as you want to spend.  Good luck.

Dave

If there are any questions as to the power of a MAGNUM rifle you just received why not call Umarex and ask them to go over it for you? Sure looks as if they missed something or it is pretty weak. Maybe they need to replace the spring or massage things a bit. Give them a chance to make good on it before your tear into it.

Hey Nice report on the 48:) Power does seem down for a magnum rifle to me, But if accurate and works for your purpose may just leave it for now? My 52 and 54 are about +/-300fps more then your 48 depending on pellet that is... I had Gene do some magic on them and they are sweeter than ever:) I can highly recomend  a Gene tune a concider it money well spent. Tony

ya thiers a definite problem with the power plant, but not to worrie it an easy fix in this rifle, either the spring or piston or breech seal needs replaced so you might as well do it all! refurbed doesn't mean they put all new parts in the gun it only means its functional, I've already been thru this with Umarex if you like the gun your just gonna have to fix it.

My refurb .22 Model 52 is faster even at the altitude I live(4700 ft) They say that the refurbs have no warranty, but I would call Umarex and explain to them that you've checked with a chrono and the numbers. They may agree to look at it for you. You may have a nicked piston seal or such that they didn't catch there when they had it. Or you can try to fix it up DYI. As stated there are Maccarri and Vortek kits. I have no experience with Vortek, but the stuff from Maccari is top notch. Have you checked your chrono out? What I do (if I have a suspect number) is chrono another rifle (of which I know where the velocity should be ) just to verify things. You gun seems plenty accurate so no worries there. If you decide to DYI, I like this site as it has good clear photos.

consistent or not...
« Reply #10 on: April 16, 2010, 01:33:10 AM »

Consistent or not I'd look into that gun's health because of the low power. Like someone said, the Diana 48 is a 20 fpe platform. I understand that you're not worried about the low power, and consistency is a great thing! But I'd be worried that the low power is a symptom of something wrong internally that could cause damage and ultimate loss of performance in the long run, great as it may be in the short.

Thats a good thought you have there Onemountain,  my curiosity would likely get the better of me:) If you have a spring compresser, it may be worth a look see, a quick lube and  new apex seal if lucky is only like 10 bucks see here  http://www.airrifleheadquarters.com/catalog/item/251485/43075.htm  or could check the spring too?

well i talked to ROB3DR on the TAG and he gave me a link with simple instructions
i tore it down very easy
the spring was greeat as was the seal
but it was completely dry
so i put a bit of moly paste on the back of the seal making sure none got on the face
and first shot was 779
then 6 in a row after that were 775-776
shes right at 19 fpe
