Im affraid it's goodby Gamo.....
« on: April 18, 2010, 01:09:01 AM »
After 4 months of shooting my 3 guns I cant help but focus on the Ruger i have. It was cheaper than the 2 Gamos and frankly, is much more refined. I once read that shooting a Gamo and the subsequent sound was akin to a train wreck is true. I cannot believe that there is that much of a difference between these rifles. The Gamos can be tuned but why should i buy something brand new just to fix it when other rifles are great out of the box? Chrony number are 830-930 between the 2 Gamos and my Ruger shoots 980 with the same 7.9 grain CP's. The Ruger feels like a real gun as well.

I agree 100%, my first airgun was a MM tuned B-26 in .22. Dano recommended it, and others too. It is a pretty accurate and powerful springer, shoots CPHP's with maybe a 1" pattern at 30 yards. I mounted an inexpensive Centerpoint scope, and have had minimal or no issues in a two year span. Solid, consistent performance.

My expert tuned Gamo Whisper .177, OTOH, was never consistent. Jammed the stop pin back into the cheap aluminum extrusion riser making it a long oval, and even when firing carefully at close range with open sights off a rest, well, it cannot pattern tightly. Tried about 8 types of recommended pellets. I used to get both my rifles (B-26 and Whisper) and shoot the same target to compare patterns. The BAM was better, every single time. Dozens of trials, three different scopes and mounts (not counting the ridiculous scope Gamo ships). I have been told I really need to learn how to handle a springer, etc.

Then TCups tells me to get a Slavia CZ-634. I ordered one on Gunbroker, had it shipped to Gene. Mounted a Bushnell scope. First time I tried it, it was so accurate, I was amazed. The very first pattern of five I shot at 25 yards or so was the tightes I had ever shot with an air rifle. I have settled on the JSB Exact pellets, and this rifle has never had any issues. I may have to give the scope a couple of clicks, but then it commences to hit the POA just about every time. Done it dozens of times in the past year or so, the last one yesterday shooting with the NTAGM group. You know, I'm not sure anyone was shooting a Gamo yesterday. I don't recall.

The BAM and the CZ both have a smoother firing cycle, and have good triggers from the factory. The are lower velocity, it's true...

The guys I respect the most tell me that the earlier all steel Gamos could be good shooters. I have seen a Whisper that was very accurate, but I think it all starts with the barrel, and the later shrouded models start with inferior barrels, so you had better hope everything else is great, which is also uncommon.

Causes 1) they have cost reduced the product to the point of inferiority. The old metal trigger group was balky, required way too much pressure. It could be replaced with a good afermarket group. The newer plastic ones - you're stuck with them for the moment (Bob Werner must be working on this).

Life is too short, and there are better choices from China and Czechoslovakia. Crosman has some promising stuff, too. Caveat emptor.

Very well put Jerry.

All the GAMO rifles I own are the older ones and I must say they are WAY nicer in every respect to the new versions.  With just a little  TLC the older guns can be turned into really nice shooters and perform very well.....

I'm glad I have my GAMO rifles..... but I doubt I'll be buying anymore of them.....

I have to agree with Jeff on the fact that the older Gamo's are much nicer and like he said with a bit of TLC they make great shooters. CDT once said that a Gamo was a Diamond In the Rough and that was very true until the  poly barrels and new plastic triggered Gamo's.
THE ONES I SLEEP WITH: BSA Lightning XL, AA TX-200, AA ProSport, BSA Ultra, HW-97K, Crosman NPSS .177, FX Cyclone, HW-30 Nicle Plated, AA-S200, Crosman Marauder, CZ-634, R-9 DG, Webley/Scott UK Tomahawk, Benji Kantana, Benji Marauder, Benji Discovery.....

They made the biggest mistake cause the only people who would buy them are people that r just begining to learn. There cash flow has decrease immensely....they need to stop b.s ing and make some better choices cause there are much better airguns for cheaper ....jorge

I have only one gamo and it is the 177 whisper. Even after a tune it isn't as good a shooter as my bam 26 or my Rem 1200. Even with the CDT trigger it is not as accurate.

 Rem.Vantage/chopped and tuned by me.

I came back to airguns at the end of the Gamo era. I prefer the BAM guns over anything gamo is putting out. I kick myself for getting rid of my MM B26 in .177. Sad thing is I don't remember why I sold it???? Still thinking about a B-25 in .22.

It is amazing to me why Gamo have taken this route to  market and sell to first timer and low end market, like a one shot deal if you ask me! IMO it makes more sense to try and sell more than "ONE"  AG?  As  wiith most things if they dont perform we tend lose interest and not to use them. It would a shame if many entry level airgunners just give up without knowing!   I am fortunate to have 2  older gamo shadows with GRT111s  in .177 and .22  both Gene tuned and are easy to use pellet stackers. I am really happy they worked out that way, my kids just love to shoot em:)  I will add that I started with Daisy bb did not give up ..and was finally hooked with a BSA meteor:)

They don't even do a good job of selling to first timers.  I bought a Big Cat from Cabelas on 4/5/2010.  There was no literature in the box, just a message stamped on the barrel warning to read the manual before firing, which is available from Gamo.  I called twice that day, giving up after 30 minutes of being on hold.  I also e-mailed them requesting the manual.  On 4/15/2020 I get an e-mail saying here's your manual.  It was a one page PDF containing an exploded view of the Big Cat.  I immediately e-mailed them back, explaining that I needed the manual.  As of today, I haven't heard back from them.  Needless to say I returned it.  I will NEVER purchase a Gamo.
