From Cash for Clunkers to Health Care

A clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year at 15 mpg uses 800 gallons of gas a year.

A vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg uses 480 gallons a year.

So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 vehicles so that's 224 million gallons saved per year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels is about 5 hours worth of US consumption.

More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about $350 million dollars

So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350 million.

We spent $8.57 for every dollar we saved.

I'm pretty sure they will do a great job with our health care, though.

Government or not, if the US want's to have any chance of energy self reliance and  a sustainable future they need to drop those gas guzzling SUV.
I bet 90% of people don't really need a 5l, 400hp SUV.

That is why I have a 5.7L engine in a passenger car......we have plenty of oil in our borders to sustain us for a VERY long time. We are just not allowed to drill for it.

Proof of vast additional US oil reserves is sketchy at best. But that's besides the point...which is that if such a large numbers of people drive such power hungry cars there's a lot of pollution both direct and indirect as well as impacting oil prices for everybody. Even if we put all that aside..what use is a 5.7l passenger car for suburban/urban  driving or even interstate for that matter. A 2.0l turbo diesel can accelerate and sustain speeds packed full, hauling moose from the forest or pulling a small yacht. Some argue for safety, that such a big car is safer on impact. Yes if you impact a smaller vehicle, but not if you go directly into a same size object. It's just like bullets, the heavier they are the more they sustain energy down rage. Considering the fact that most don't even use a seat belt then the size factor is completely irrelevant.
I see no other reason for having such big cars for everyday use, unless they are meant to show off. Personally i never really bought into the showing off car thingy.

2.4l, 170hp, 23mgp more than you'll ever need. Especially if all you're doing is driving your family to school/work.
