Wild time Sunday afternoon
« on: April 19, 2010, 03:06:34 PM »
My son Troy had an old boat for sale setting in my front  yard. about 3:15, under a clear blue sky, a twister (dust devil) formed at the  front half of my house, damaged a few shingles, picked up the boat, and threw it  into the middle of the highway ! A neighbor was outside and saw it all. She  said the boat went up in the air and twisted around 3 or 4 times before being  dashed down onto the pavement. The funnel traveled about 100 feet across the  neighbors yard then just went up and disappeared. Debris was strewn around like  a bomb had gone off. One boat seat was hanging on the power line. Funny thing  is that nothing on the back side of the house was bothered -- still had clothes  hanging on the line ! Fortunately no one was injured and no other property was  damaged. I shudder at the thought had a car been passing at that  moment.

Glad to hear nobody hurt, and I hope the boat and trailer are not badly damaged.

I've seen plenty of small dust devils. We used to run, or ride our bikes through them as kids, but nothing that big on land. I have seen large water spouts while out sailing on Sunny days. Big enough that it would have done sail and rigging damage if caught in one.
