pistols 'n crows
« on: April 20, 2010, 11:15:40 AM »

This thread here got me thinking; please read it before responding here.

At what range would a little pump pistol be ok for doing a crow with a body shot? They seem pretty tough to me. I'm inclined to recommend the .22 Benji pistol to him just because it's a better price on it, but then I began to wonder if the faster 1377 would be better for penetration. Then I began to wonder if a pistol is sufficient at all for a crow at any real range.

So, as I am wont to do, I decided to bug the hunters in the Hunting Gate about it after not finding much in the way of info in a (albeit short) search.

So, what's your take? 1377 or HB22 better for taking crows? Is either really sufficient? If they are, what's a maximum advisable range. PA rates the 1377 as 600 fps and the HB22 as 460 fps, but Lord knows how accurate their numbers are. Assuming those numbers are for PBA raptors that would be 4.3 fpe for the 1377 and 4.7 fpe for the HB22. Assuming those velocities are for lead RWS hobbies they would give 5.6 fpe for both the 1377 and the HB22.

Oh, and BTW, by all means weigh in on the other thread, but please don't turn that one into a hunting debate thread. I got in trouble once for doing that inadvertantly; that's why I started this thread here. So do try to keep the critter-killin talk (mostly) confined to this thread.

Thanks in advance ladies and gents,

~E

I haven't used pistola's on crow's but I know the 1377 can drop a small G-hog within the 1377's killing range. I took this young G-hog last year with my stock 1377, CPHP pellet at 15yrd's with a shot to the fusebox. Ed

speaking of killing range, what would you consider the 1377's killing range to be..?

I have a 1377 that Tim over at Mac1 rebarreled with a 14" .22cal and did some other tune up work on. Insted of the normal 10 pumps I can now pump her up to 15 and I'm getting about 550 to 600fps depending on the pellet. I have taken out about a dozen crows with it out to about 30 yards. I either go for a head, or strait on chest shot although I have taken down one with a strait on back shot. I don't try to shoot through the wings.

Well, my <500fps .177 RWS Diana model 24 air rifle killed a Crow with a head-shot at 26 yards.
My multi pumper Crosman 1377 which is supposed to spit out .177 pellets at 600+ fps (10 pumps) should be ok for a Crow I guess.  But of course the pistol`s barrel is shorter....so there might be some wasted air.
