NPSS Dry Fire
« on: April 28, 2010, 03:03:44 AM »
I just recently got my 177 remington/crosman npss and while out hunting a friend of mine dry fired it on accident (doh!). There were no immediate effects but there was alot of smoke curling out of the barrel, now the gun seems to shoot fine, groups fine @ 25 yards (still stacking pellets). but the bigger questions are, what are the chances anything was damaged, and if so how can I fix them myself?

also the scope never seems to hold a zero, but it will stack pellets one shot after another, but just at different zeroes, takes about 10-15 shots for the zero to change. i think im gonna use blue loctite on all the screws and see if that helps.

thanks for any help

Hello Collins,

I don't think one dry fire will hurt your air gun, unless your seal was already damaged during installation at the factory! Many dry fires or the use of very light pellets can damage your seal.

Check your scope by marking your scope in front and behind the scope mounts. Also mark the the receiver where the scope mount attach. Use a pencil. Check your marks after shooting, and see if you can see any movement. If you do blue loctite, clean all of your screws with alcohol first, then have a drink for me ;-) !!!

1 dry fire might not hurt it. If it still shoots good Id leave it alone unless your looking for an excuse to rebuild it. My brother in law dry fired my big cat to test the power of it, yeah, it still shot fine. But that was my excuse to tear it apart and man am I glad I did. Shoots 100 times better with new maccari tune kit and filled stock.

The scope issues. When I mount a scope tighten the 4 screws on each ring in an criss cross pattern till they are all tight back and forth back and forth. Then let it set for bout 30 min while I set up the range. Then tighten again and check them about every 10 shots. Then before I shoot I check them. Sounds like alot of time but its not and keeps the scope from moving. You can mark the scope behind the rings with a pencil and watch it to see if the scope is sliding back.

I have to warn you right now, it insanely ADDICTIVE! I started with building a spring compressor and taking apart one of my 30 dollar guns to see if I wanted to tackle one of my more expensive guns. Next thing you know I ripping into all my guns and getting tips here on things to make it better and having a ball learning these things. Now all of my higher end guns are deburred lubed and home tuned, triggers are replaced, filled stocks and shimming scopes. Its ludacris and you cant stop but youll have a blast. lol Just remember to look out the garage window and wave to the wife once in a while.

Ill let the guys that have one of these lead you on the tune kits. If you do a search here on spring compressors youll find several good ideas on how to build them.

Welcome to the forum and good luck.

haha yeah I can believe it, do you have any good web pages to look at for starters? I've been looking around but I haven't found a good guide or place for beginners.

Thanks!
