scope mount Loctite or not ?
« on: April 28, 2010, 12:27:35 PM »
Just picked up my new RWS 48 today and I am going to mount the scope and sight it in in the morning. I ride a Harley and things that can come loose get loctited .
Should I use blue loctite on the scope base and and ring screws?

I have a 48 and love it but it's a very powerful, hard hitting rifle and scope mount can be crucial with them.  Do yourself a favor,,, clean everything with denatured alcohol to make sure any hint of oil or grease is removed.  By everything I mean the top of the rifle receiver, the dovetail grooves, all the metal surfaces on the mount base, rings and screws.  After that is accomplished go ahead and mount your scope using blue loc-tite on all the mounting screws.  after the scope is completely mounted put it aside and give the loc-tite 48 hours to dry and cure before taking your first shot.  Also, before you start shooting mark the scope tube with pencil lines on both sides of the scope rings.  This will give you a constant reference point so you can immediately notice if the scope if the scope has moved at all.   I have used this method on all of my rifles, even my magnum springers, like my RWS 40, and I have never had any problems with scope creep.

You got yourself a nice shooter there... Congrats and enjoy.

Thanks Jeff will do. I took a couple of shots (rws super domes)today with the iron sights . Nice accurate gun at 25 yrds. The G-Hogs are doomed.

That 48 will definitely do a job on the g-hogs.  My 48 is in .20 caliber and she is a HAMMER  :)   Another nice thing about the 48 is how easy it is to install some sling swivels so you can "sling her up" on those long hunts.  I'll be looking forward to your future posts with your 48.

When hunting  hogs with my .22 I shove a few sticks about 12" long in the ground and stick some strawberry bubble gum to the tops. The hogs can't resist , stand up to eat and ...

Now that is something I have to try .  I've never heard of that before but what the heck, I'll give it a try.  I do an awful lot of g-hog hunting at a local duck farm that is infested with them and I'm always looking for a new trick to put up my sleeve...

You are serious about that right   ???    :)

Yes I read about this tactic on a hunting forum. I tried it last year and it worked, granted I was set up about 70 yards away in some bush. I also got medevil on one last year with a shovel. Did you know that they growl when smashed with a shovel. lol

I used to use Loc-tite on the base and ring screws but stopped last year. The reason is, all my guns are target guns (HW97Ks) and I tend to take them apart to try out new parts, different lubes etc etc. I've never had ring or base screws loosen in the interim times. These guns are fit with Sportsmatch two piece mounts and 30mm tube, high magnification optics... also, all screws are tightened with a torque screwdriver.

I wouldn't recommend doing this for a magnum rifle... or a rifle that will seldom or never get taken apart.

Just some dude... move along, nothing to see here.
