« on: April 29, 2010, 09:19:17 AM »
i have machined a number of odds and ends for all by guns and as well i am building a pcp and would like to know of a common finishes other than blueing. i like the matte black is there any spray on then bake to harden stuff that is easy, i'm sure i could take them to be anodized or powder coated but tring to save money.

Look at Brownell's. They have everything. If they don't carry it, it's not worth it.

shady brownells sells some great great bake on finishes that are epoxy spray type.. called gun-kote... think they have another line of spray on bake on finishes too but cant remember

depending on the part valve cover wrinkle paint is nice especially if you use a heat gun for metal or a hair dryer for plastic parts.... but it take a week or more for it to really harden up to withstand constant touching.....

and I know you said no to bluing but there ARE some great cold blues out there but they are usualy made by some smaller companies and you gotta really look for it

both this http://www.shootersolutions.com/gunbluingkit.html

and this http://www.bluewonder.us/re both very good products!

brownells also has some nice case hardening salts where you litterally bed the item into the salts and heat them to temps... think its arounf 450-500 degrees and gives a case hardened look..... though I would NO bake that stuff in your regular oven!!!

Thanks Michael....i took yours and redfeathers advise and i called brownell's and they got me hooked up with a spray on matte black that dries in 24 hours then you bake at 300 for an hour and they claim it looks the best and can not be removed without sandblasting it off.

also shady I know they offer alot of the spray on products in bulk too if you have your own spray guns.... while rattle cans are great for small jobs and or testing product if you have the option bulk is always better!! lol and I would imagine with a spray setup you could tune the nozzles for the job at hand...

Heck I know there are a few top gun companies that use basicly an identical product and combine it with a parkerizing as a base coat that pretty much make a finish impervious to anything short of sandblasting it back down LOL ..\

and brownells is right when its cured you more or less have to sand the hell out of it or sandblast it to get it off..... .......

Parkerizing should also be considered. It relatively inexpensive to get all of the components with the exception of the stainless pot you need to cook the parts in. You need stainless to keep the chemical reaction from going to the pan instead of the parts. I've done a couple of barrels and when I get the free time, I'm going to do rework a barrel I did my first try on. Finish was descent but I can do better. Main ingredients are manganese powder (can be bought cheap from a craft supplier), distilled water and some steel wool. Or, you can buy kits already put together that have all the ingredients. Yes, it's more involved than sanding, cleaning and spray painting. But the finished product is worth the effort, IMO. Picture below is from the fellow that posted this step by step procedure. Excellent results!!!!

Check out this set of instructions. Parkerizing...[/b][/i]

Happy Shooting....and refinishing!!!!

Thanks Dave...I don't think that will work for 6061 aluminum but i will most definatly keep the link for i do have something that i would like to use this for. great info thanks a bunch.also some parts to the pcp would be hard to fit in the pot for boiling like for say the pressure tube.
