Good Hunting Pistol
« on: April 29, 2010, 02:46:15 PM »
I've  been looking into Co2 pistols lately like the Crosman 2300 series and the smaller guns like the 2250.  Will these guns do the job on small game/pests?  I'm open to the idea of a breakbarrel but I'd rather have a Co2 pistol.  Any other suggestions would be great.  Thanks.

A Crosman 1377 would be on my list, with suitable minor mods. If you can take pumpers, this is a lot of gun and you can do anything with it. A 1322 might be even better if you can find one. Benji HB22 is another hefty MSP that I wish I had.

I have blasted sparrows with the P3, under 15 yds. Ok for little pests, not a real hunter.

I really haven't found a springer pistola I would recommend for anything other than the smallest vermin and birds. The most powerful ones are hard to be accurate with, and they still really aren't very powerful. I just got the HW45 and haven't put numbers together yet, but I can be hopeful. The P5 Magnum is at the upper end, and it's really not much in the way of FPE. You might bag a squirrel out to 15 yds. but it would be dicey.

Now then. You do know thatCrosman is introducing the Marauder pistol this summer? Now THATis what I'm talkin' about.

I just don't care for CO2 guns but they actually make sense for hunting pistols.

I have seen the Marauder pistol and it looks awesome but I have now where near the funds for that right now but when I eventually get my Disco and pump combo I might look into the pistol.  Other than that thanks for the info

the 2300 family of pistols unfortunately are .177 and at those velocities (500 fps) is going to be tough to kill humanely unless you get really up close and personal with your quarry. they are designed to be more consistent and accurate. I built a .22 carbine out of my 2300 because i wanted the power adjuster and the adjustable trigger, but had to change the hammer spring, the oring on the bolt and put a 14 inch .22 barrel. Now it shoots 505 fps with RWS hobbies and its a one hole rifle. I use it for birds all the way up to crows  and out to a max range of 30 yards. The 2240 is a more apt "pest control" gun mainly because it starts as a .22, but it shoots an average of 420 fps, so your range diminishes. in your case i would go to the crosman custom shop and build yourself a high spec pistol, 2240 plus a .22 barrel (14 inch minimum), metal breach (need a scope when power is this low, because you only get 1 shot) and when it gets to you, replace the hammer spring with a stronger one (dont go crazy, or you'll end up snapping the bolt if you pull it to hard...). That should give you a 500 to 550 fps with a light to medium weight pellet. use wadcutters since you are using short ranges and aerodynamics dont really come into play, and they will transfer all their energy on impact, and keep your ranges realistic (30 yards) and your game  in check (up to squirrel size only) and you should be ok. hope this helps. oh yeah... the 1377 can be made to shoot .22 also and a flat top piston conversion will give you 650 + fps with .22, but that is changing a lot of the gun... good hunter.

I like the 1377 it costs 50 bucks new and with another 40 bucks can be brought up to 700fps and really accurate in the correct hands and no need for co2. i got one two weeks ago and my 8 year old daughter can blast a soda can every shot at 20 yards.

i had one for about a day lol
it had a horrible trigger accuracy was ok but id build a pcp sisco pistol beofr i got one of these
personally for pests and birds
say squirrles rabbits and grouse a P1 is decent for under 15 -20 yards
i love mine as well as pcp pistols
co2 is great when its above 50-55 under that it starts to lack and shoots bad
springs shoot in any temp
just my opinion
i have an LD also which is dead accurate but not a cold weather gun

1377 and 2240's are both good hunting pistola's within their killing range. I've taken feather, squirrel and a G-hog with pistola's. Keep your kill's with in the 20yrd range, shot placement and type of pellet are a must. Ed

What way was the trigger bad then? Creepy or heavy or just unpredictable? Double action or single action mode? So far I've heard good things of Evanix products and I assume this is just like the others.

So what do you need for the $40 to get the muzzle velocity up?

the flat top piston for starters and the modified valve the valve is $25 and the piston i would go with the one from airgunsmith.com for $35 but mountainair has a simaliar one but is delrin for $25 so i was 10 dollars off but it is well worth it if you want the most from your 1377. mine will push a easy 700 + fps with 12 pumps. and if your still not satisfied with that you can get a 14 inch barrel and get a few more fps and i think there around $25 from bryan and associatesand i just checked they offer the modified valve as well for $25 at airgunsmith.com.

Browning 800 mag powerfull but heavy u need a steady hand and under 20yrds I've bagged a bird 22 yrds out on luck but I would keep it under 20 now I had a carbine built by roy weid (mountain air) and I was told by him 11 grain pellets .22 cal up to 750 fps on co2 and more with hpa I had a 2250tx custom built by roy to take both air and co2 right now its on its way to be camoed by mr shadow basically unless u go 1377 pumper that pushes up to 600 fps with mods or the 2240 2250 its very limited on hunter pistolas unless u custom make one me and roy been talking about a .25 cal pistol on hpa pushing 550 fps that's next on the list
