RWS 34p wont shoot worth a s**t
« on: May 01, 2010, 04:25:41 AM »
I bought a new 34p the other day and I can't hit a consistant group past 12yds :emoticon:  I take it out to 30yds and its all over the place :0  its a .22cal and these guns usually shoot CP's pretty good and I've tried to do everything to make it shoot accurately :p  I've even laped the barrel with mothers and lubed it you name it it just won't shoot a decent group past 12yds :emoticon:  any body got any ideas? before I send it back.

It's good to let airgun barrels season in with lead to fill in any imperfections which help's with accuracy, how's the crown on it?. Have you tried different brands and types of pellet's and how many rounds have you put through it?. Ed

Now to start off, Check the tightness of your screws !

Then check to see if your scope is moving by marking it with a pencil. For and aft of the rings, and mounts on the receiver.

If this is your first springer, hold it lightly, and the exact way every shot !

To check the barrel crown, use a q-tip, and go around the barrel opening very gently to see if you have any snags.

And as Ed has already said, airguns need lots of lead through them to fill the imperfections in the barrel.

Degrease and loctite the screws, check breech seal, repeatable hold and try other pellets. A softer lead pellet will season the barrel faster.  My Panther didn't like CP's. Try shooting open sights to see if it is a scope problem.

Well I've tried 2 scopes and 2 mounts, it has a UTG mount and rings all the screws are tight I've put almost 500rds thru it I just recleaned the barrel I have not looked at the crown yet but have done everything else to the rifle but I will give one last look over  If it still shoots like a shotgun its over!

Personally I wouldn't have lapped the barrel. Air rifle barrels aren't as hard a steel as powder burners and lapping can often do more harm than good on an AR.  I'd just check the screws, the breech port and the muzzle crown. Diana's seem to take a while to come into their own, but once they get a good leading in the barrel, accuracy will consistantly improve. Then a dry patch or two periodically will buff and remove any excess build up. tjk

well thanks for all the input but I've covered all the basis with this one and everything I've done has made no difference it shoot all over the place and some don't evem hit the 10x12 target at 30yds and yes its done it with every pellet I've tried same results so my conclusion is the barrel is bad, I say this because I have alot of experience with airguns and I pretty much know a bad gun when I shoot one and this gun is no good out of the box, it happens I've had a few this way in the past even a polish on the crown didn't help, thanks fellas

What tjk said- every time you clean (or lap) that barrel, you are starting all over again to get the barrel seasoned. It has to lead up before you are back to normal. Whatever the issue, it's not the bore.

If you eliminate the stock screws and the optics through the steps others have outlined, and it locks up tight when you close it,it pretty much leaves seals... and then you.

I had the same problem before and one thing I tried was to push a pellet throught the barrel and in my rifle I found it was tight in the first 3 inches of the breach end of the barrel then it got eayser as it went down the barrel the pellet must have  bounced all the way down the barrel , I couldn't get it to group, But I was told to take some fine paper like 400 grit and put it on a mandrel to remove the resatriction. It worked fine now it shoots one holers all day long. I don't know if this is your problem but like you I tried all the normal stuff. PS I did the sanding a little at a time and checked as I went.My thinking is when they made the rifle they drilled the breach barrel hole to tight and it swaged the breach end of the barrel. Howie PS this was not my idea but I had some help from Mike M.he really knows air guns .

Mark, Based on everything i see here, I would agree you have an odd ball. I would send it back for another one . The 34,s are a great gun and should not be driving you nuts:)  One thing I have done  if i get a real odd situation is get a 1/8" dowel and slowly push a pellet from breach end through the barrel you will feel tight loose tight loose etcc if its loose in the last few inches of barrel it is not typically good for accuracy. I have noticed the Diana/rws barrels tend to have slight choke condition. The breach ball should lock tight have see one that allowed a few thou barrel tip movement Umarex replaced the whole gun in that case. Tony
