PLEASE HELP TRAIL NP XL PROBLEM
« on: May 01, 2010, 04:45:45 AM »
ok i know i have bad luck but this is getting ridiculous.  just got my replacement from P.A. and somethings wrong with it too.first off it did cock the first shot. i ran a few patches thru nit then test fired it . sounded like a 22 going off. was expected. second cock the cocking arm wanted to fold outward. then as i was looking at it this small U shaped plastic piece fell off  the arm. i can see it is a slide guard for the arm but i wont stay in place on the notch in the arm. the only way it will cock is if i hold the arm attached to the barrel in until the stroke starts. then it seems to shoot fine but i know i shouldn't have to do this. please to share with me some wisdom.
thanks in advance
ricky

There's a roller that sits on the side of the cocking arm and if it has fallen off it can cause the arm to sit lower underneath the action. This may be causing the arm to kick out on you also along with not keeping the slid clip in place. Ed

I agree with shadow's call ,if you removed the stock check again for that little roller they fall off easy during reassembly, someone else was talking about that slide piece too.

i see a hole in the inner arm. is this where the roller is supposed to be. now that i look at it it seems P.A.sent me a used gun as it has wear marks in the stock where the arm was making contact with it. im very dissatisfied with them at this point. for the money youd think they would have better quality control.

I was wondering about that hole in the stock and if that's where the mount stud for the roller was then there's your problem. Ed

ok i took the stock off and lo and behold there was the roller stuck in the corner of the hollowed out part of the stock. it looks like it just presses into the hole in the arm as it has grooves on it. is that all that holds it in? i pressed it in as tight as i can get it and it seems to be working fine now. im just afraid that it will jump out again. any suggestions on how to prevent this from happening again?
thank you again for sharing the wisdom with me

Yes that hole is where the roller stud is pressed into the cocking rod.

On my XL the plastic roller can't fall off like it would with a Gamo cocking arm roller. The outer end of the stud's axle is larger than the roller ID to retain the roller on the axle.  A nice feature when re-assmembly the gun.

The end of stud that fits into the cocking arm  appears to be a splined joint.  Try supporting the cocking arm on a solid surface such as a steel bar and tap the outer end of the stud into place using a pointed punch, nail set, large nail, anything that will fit into the dimple in the end of the stud axle, but do not hit the end of the axle directly, or you could flair it more and bind, or break the plastic roller.

Or, just send that gun back too.

Just re-read your last. If you could push the roller stud back into the cocking rod with just your fingers, the spline is too loose and it's possable the roller stud it will come out again.

If it went in snug and you had to push hard. Pop it out, wash the stud and hole with alcoho,l and use red Locktite on the splines of the stud. Press it back into the cocking rod, wipe off any excess and let set for 24 hours before putting the action back in the stock.

If it went in VERY easy, you can "peen" the hole in the cocking arm tighter.  Support the end of the stud axle by only contacting in the dimple in the end of the axle.  Using a pin punch and a small hammer,  make punch marks (dents) in the cocking rod right next to the joint at several places around the outer edge of the joint. The punch marks don't have to be deep to swell the metal inward thus tightening the hole around the roller stud.

thanks paul. i shot about 100 pellets thru it and it fell out again. wish  i had read the forum first. cleaned it off with contact cleaner and applied locktite blue to it. set it in with a punch and heard a click. hope it set rite. if it doesnt hold this time i am sending it back. pitty cause i like the gun so far but i think they sent me someone else s return because i can see where the wood has been scared from someone else trying to cock it while it was broke.
thanks again for all the help
