Custom PCP started
« on: May 01, 2010, 08:53:17 AM »
I found time to get started on my next project gun today I snapped a few photo "camera sucks" nothing spectacular but had some fun with it. I want to build a custom PCP from almost scratch I will be machining all the internal components like valve, power adjustment and end cap/check valve.i started with the machining of the threads on the inside of the pressure tube to fit the end cap the tube is 4130 steel tube 1 1/8 od by .959 id this stuff is hard very hard. next was the end cap this is going to be 304 stainless steel and as well this stuff is incredibly hard but I managed after several hours on the lathe to produce a nice fitting threaded cap note it still needs to be cut off drilled tapped and check valve fitted as well as o-ring grooves to seal it up. overall I was very happy with the way it went and look forward to fabricating the rest of it and I also made a 10" mock tube with threads and such to do some initial testing on the cap and valves to make sure no leaks before assembly of the pressure tube. I will continue to post pics to this thread periodically to keep everyone updated to my progress.

Coolness, I had a plan to do this last year when I was still running my shop, but never had time between company work.  Now I have more time, but no shop, that's how life is I suppose:)  I've been designing a bunch of my stuff in Catia, and I know of a small CNC shop that may be willing to make a small run of parts for me.  "Someday", haha!!!

Looks good so far, I never much liked turning SS on a lathe, tough stuff!

Looks like a good start....
How much air CCs will it hold..

That 4130 is hard stuff..My midget hat a 4130 frame
sent it end for end in one race...couldn't straighten the role cage
for trying...had to cut it of & build a new one...

With stainless spin it fast with heaps of coolant..&  it
will come up like chrome..Don't let it get hot..

Hi Peter...i have not done any calculations yet for cc i was restricted to how long a piece i could turn out due to the 9x20 lathe but the pressurized area should be .959 id by 10 inches.i was fully aware when starting the project that i was not going to get but around 10-20 good shots from it before refill the next step is the valve which is brass so that should be easier on the lathe and tooling.

there just has been no time lately for working on my new project but found a little today. I am real close to my first pressure test the pressure tube is done and I will post pics after I get it shined up but have been more concentrating on the fill adapter and valve. I'm still waiting on two crosman valve stems to fit and finish the last machine work on the valve and fill/check and I got me a hose and adapter from jds airman to fill with my nitrogen tanks. the reason for the lack of time is I have been working every second  I have to round up cash for a new mill so I can start on the breech and I made it this week so I ordered the mill and should have some evening time to start moving this project along.

yup i will tap the valve on three sides towards the rear and i have not got to that yet as you can see i still have the large piece on it for chucking it in the lathe. this is not a extrodinary design it is more like a over grown 22xx but the breech and bolt will be different i am going more in the tactical look with adjustable stock so my kids can reach the trigger.
