Benji pump mod for quicker filling
« on: May 02, 2010, 10:20:14 AM »
This morning I made an adapter to connect my shop air compressor the my Benjamin hand pump.  It screws in where the small, brass air filter goes.  I set my shop compressor regulator to 30 psi.  This works very well.  I pumped my 22ci 3000# HPA tank to 1000 psi in about 60 strokes and 2500# in about 100 more.  Way quicker that sucking atmospheric air.  The only drawback is it heats up quicker.

Install a transmission cooler between the air compressor and the hand pump inlet. You could have the cooler lay flat and put a block of dry ice on top of it.
Or, you could submerge the cooler in a container of ice water.
Even just having a good fan or window unit air conditioner blowing across the cooler would give a much cooler air charge to the pump and prolong the pump cycle prior to pump overheating.

You could also install water traps at the compressor outlet, and at the pump inlet to remove as much moisture as possible.

I have a moisture trap on the compressor output and it only takes one compressor run to 110psi to fill the tank then I unplug it and hook it up.  The first session is 40-50 strokes and it gets warm.  If more are needed, I wait about 10 minutes with the pump extended and then give another 20-30 strokes.
