Storm rolled over 3 Yellow Beaks
« on: May 02, 2010, 11:25:27 AM »
Missed 3 Starlings in the late morning then connected on one 44 yards out (Heard that satisfying pop sound). It looked around and flew off...in perfect health. I thought the distance was too great and the pellet glanced off....anyways, I went out to take a look-see and it was lying dead 20 yards away.

Second one down is the one I'm really proud of: Standing Off-Hand shot right in the back of it's head...it just dropped spread eagle. Yardage was only 28 yards though.

Third one got hit it the right side and toppled over...D.O.I....Dead On Impact.....37 yard distance.

Missed on 5 more Starlings in-between those dead birds.....and missed on a male Grackle. That would've been the icing on the cake.

Used a Crosman Storm XT shooting .177 Crosman Wadcutters with the aid of a Bushy Banner 3X9-40mm AO scope.

Thanks for the kind comments guys.  I just de-feathered and cleaned them up....they're in the freezer waiting to be cooked and made into broth.  Yum yum.  And yes, they were pecking at the ground/grass and moving constantly.

Here's the CSI results;

First one got shot thru the right ribcage and the pellet exited at the left breast.  Surprising it could still fly....must be the adrenaline.

Second one got smacked right in the middle of the back of the head....I think the pellet could still be in there....I didn't dig around in there, but there was no exit wound, unless the pellet came out of it's mouth....which is possible.

Third one's damage was devastating, the pellet entered in the right breast and travelled diagonally thru it's body and exited near it's rear end on the left side.

Good shootin on the yellow beaks and a nice pic.  Rifle looks great laying there next to it's harvest.  I'm glad to hear that someone else besides me puts the yellow beaks to culinary use  :)

You guys really eat those yellow beaks?

You have to have quite a few to make a meal, don't you?

I guess I have always thought of them as a sort of "trashy" bird and never really thought of eating them......You know, kind of like eating a rat or something.

Do they taste allright?

Stanley? I have to echo Brian, do you REALLY eat those starlings? We've all heard the ditty..."Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie..." but I thought it was only a kiddies song. What do they taste like?

Thanks guys.  I think Jeff`s the one that have eaten them....I/we just boil them for the broth.  I tried to eat a piece of the meat but it was very leathery.  I think it was Jeff/Longislandhunter that suggested to marinate them in lemon juice to tenderize them....I might do that on another batch just to see.

Yep...those cheapy Crosmans still can get the job done.  I missed on another 8 over the last few days.....I think mainly due to the cheap pellets I use and there was abit of cross-wind.  Sometimes I see the grass and/or dirt puff up beside them....only 1 or 2" from a hit.
