You guys are killing me!
« on: May 04, 2010, 03:55:17 PM »
I've been hunting at least twice per week for the last month and have NADA to show for it!  Jake "Team Roper" has taken me coyote hunting a couple of times he gets one Atchman-nada.  I've seen at least a couple hundred turkeys-NADA.  Today I downloaded some great new sounds for coyote hunting-I see a crow, a deer, and some sort of big crane-like bird that came to my calling. Any bets that when it is deer season I see-NADA!

Even my employees are teasing me as the worst hunter ever! :D

Well in a month I'm going to the land of prairie dogs and coyotes-KANSAS!

On another sour note today, I was messing with my problematic Hammerli Titan. When I first started shooting it I noticed that my Gamo scope was broken.  I put the original scope on it, and it broke it.  Thebookdoc, needs this gun to test his scopes! On top of that for some reason my Air Hawk (my other PROBLEM gun) for some reason now needs the scope shimmed so that I can adjust it low enough.  Just on a downward cycle of luck that last few weeks.  On the good side though, my TF 89, 99, and Whisper, and 350 are shooting great!  I'm taking them to Kansas with me for hunting.  That way my family members can enjoy some prairie dog hunting and plinking with me. :)  Now to order like a case of pellets!  Of course they ALL like different pellets. :D

I feel your pain Randy ! That was me  first few years after I moved up here. Deer season for several years was just sit in a tree and freeze while listening to everyone around me get a deer.

Went Pheasant hunting with some freinds and spent the entire day walking and seeing nothing. A week later I come home from the store and there's a Pheasent struting around my backyard and I can't touch it !!! The only other Pheasent I saw was while still hunting Deer, I almost stepped on it going through a hedge row.

Turkeys were everywhere except where I was calling from. Again, still hunting Deer on an east facing ridge, I had 12 Turkeys working  up hill, searching for food within 10 yards of where I was standing in a small clearing. Couldn't help thinking why they never come around during Turkey season .... and what would a 12 ga slug would do to a Turkey !!! :D

A few years of only seeing the wrong game, at the wrong time can make ya a bit crazy !!!! :D

After a few years  of that, things changed (or I did) and I started seeing the right game at the right time.

Like the others said - hang in there, you'll get 'em.

Paul.

I've seen more deer lately than I've seen in my entire life!  They are just everywhere in East Tennessee now.  When I was young we drive up to the mountains to see a deer, bear, or turkey.  Now they are all over the place!  I've seen deer and turkeys within five minutes of my house roaming through subdivisions.

Knoxville is in the Tennessee Valley.  However there are LOTS of hills and woods.  With so much better land folks don't build so much on the hill sides.  That allows the animals to live up there.  Also along the flood plains you can't build so animals abound in those areas.

Anyway, I'll keep at it.  Going to a coyote calling clinic on Saturday.  Maybe he'll teach me something. :)

I am sure you will get your fill of prarie dogs out in Kansas. My moms half of the family is in whichita and haysville area. We used to go there all the time from Lawton Ok, Ft Sill. Man the highways are lined by them. Take my kids to the parks there in lawton and feed them every time we go home, they are thick as fleas. You should get your fill.

I hear ya on the turkeys. The thursday before turkey season opened We turned onto my road and standing next to the tree line was a big turkey! We have a exchange student from taiwan that didnt know what it was and here are me the wife and 3 kids windows rolled down stoped dead about 15 ft from it gobbling like idiots and its just staring back at us. Never ran. Then opening day you think I saw anything? Heck no still havent. lol Saw 1 doe, but thats it.

Good luck on the cyotes. Cant wait to see some pics of the trip.

I have a better one.  I just left the field and was heading home.  I had to STOP THE CAR AND BEEP THE HORN to get them out of the way!  That is the closest I've ever been to one!

Last week I was going turkey hunting and had to stop the car TWICE to get all of the stupid deer out of the way!  I tell you if I don't get a deer this year I give up on hunting.  However I had a strategy.  I'm going to ACT like I'm turkey hunting or predator calling so they'll THINK I'm not after them!  That way I'll have to shoo them away since they cover me up when I'm not after them. :D

BTW:  Ordered a new scope today for the land of Ahhs.  My 350 is getting a 3 x 12 scope for the flipping of prairie dogs.  Since it deserves it, my TF 99 is getting the 350's cast off Leapers scope.  Both the scope and the TF99 have been excellent so I've decided to marry them to each other. :)

Hunting ?    If it was easy then everyone would want to do it.      It is mostly sit and wait.   I have gone 2 years and never got to shoot a decent deer.    Then the 3 rd year shoot the limit (6).

Just keep at it.   Beats being at the house.

Thats funny. I just bought a 4-16 x 40 AO illuminated ret Center Point for my 350. Been looking at it for a couple weeks at wally world. I wanted a 3-9 x 32 or 40 for the hunter but for 10 dollars more I got the big whiz bang one and will slide everything to the right. The hunter gets the Leapers 3-9x 40 ao an dthe big cat will get my leapers tactedge 4x32 off the hunter.

The deer and turkeys must have a calender with the seasons on it. That way they can plan their outings and know when to keep their heads low.

Funny how great minds think alike. ANd my 350 is quickly becoming my favorite. Good luck out there.

I went out to get my camera today.  All there was was a blurry picture of a turkey.  However, when I walked in the field, with no gun, no nothing I could hear them gobbling EVERYWHERE!  I may have to lay out of church on Sunday.
