Question on spring fatigue

I read somewhere  that if you leave a springer cocked overnight it would cause a loss of about 100 FPS due to spring fatigue. And this guy said he had done this and found  it helped his harsh shooting rifle to smooth out some and made it shoot better. I thought I would  ask here , as I'm thinking of doing this with my B26 in .177. I was thinking that a little slower pellet speed would help . Any opinions? kirby

David, I hunt with my airgun's and cock them before entering the hunt zone. Sometimes their cocked for a couple of hour's and I hunt almost everyday. I chrony my babies to keep a eye on just that, fps and I haven't noticed much of a change as of yet. I imagine after awhile it will cause spring fatigue but I've never heard of a overnight cure, just my pennies worth. Ed

Like Ed I also cock my springers while hunting and they sometimes stay cocked for long periods of time.  I haven't noticed any significant loss of power yet, although I agree with Ed that over time I guess it would have an impact.

If you are looking for a slower FPS why not just use a heavier pellet??

Thanks guys , yes i am looking to slow it down and maybe smooth it out a little in the process . It'll probably smooth out with a few hundred more pellets. I just thought this was interesting and seem in theory to be feasible.  kirby

Gene , I checked over in the library an read what you were referring to and it looks like it would take about 4 weeks on most models to make a 100 fps difference. Thanks that is what I was looking for . I have no way of checking velocity but I may let it sit for a couple of weeks and just see what happens. The worst that can happen is I'll wind up tuning  it or having it tuned ,which wouldn't be a bad thing. Would it be possible to have a tune on the B26 and use a weaker spring to lower the velocity down to around 750 fps with cpl's  or something similar ? kirby

David, why not try a heavier pellet, like the CPH pellet.. I think they are around 9.7 gn. That may be a simpler solution like Jeff said..:)
