GAMO Hunter Extreme
« on: April 29, 2007, 01:51:35 PM »
Took the Extreme out to the "range" and put a few pellets through it today.
Here's my first impressions:
Although the stock is made of better (harder / heavier) wood than the 1250's it
still has quite a twang to it when firing. The shroud is a bit cheesy, made of tin and plastic, but it
is pretty solid and feels really nice to grab during cocking.
That's the end of the "bad" stuff, the rifle shoots a bit better than the 1250, I found it easier to get good groups
with it. (see pics) There was a pretty strong / gusty left to right wind today which was hard to predict at times,
this tended to push shots slightly to the right, but it still grouped well, delivering 1.5" groups easily.
It chony'ed CPL's at around 1187 and CPH's at 1072 (average) and was very consistent. FPS only varied about 10fps
between shots.
On the whole I'm very happy with it and glad I bought it.
Here's some pics from the range today, if you look closely you will see three target "stumps" in the trees, at 20, 27. and
around 38 yards (I labeled them in the pics) the targets are the standard Walmart 3 and 2" day glow type:

As a side note... the CFX I tuned last night has issues... see the pic. It has a bad loss of power from a damaged seal
and can't group right to save it's life... looks like another teardown and new seal are in order.

Hey Roald, good to see some info on the newer Gamo Air Rifles.. Gives us a good idea how it shoots.. By the way.. Your issues with the CFX accuracy is odd. Normally they are great shooters and usually get great groops.. Could it be the pellets you were using? I have three of the CFX's and all are very accurate..

I missed a bur on one of the breech plug holding pin holes.
It damaged the seal, I've ordered two more form Rich... just incase I toast another one   :)
I'll fix it. It fires a lot better (quiter / smoother), just varying velocities causing bad groups.

Just a bit of extra info. The targets are stuck to 2 3/4"  X   2 3/4" X 16" bits of timber
that Dano gets from work.. not 2 X 4, I think knowing that will make those groups look a
lot better (being on 2.75" and not 4")  :D

He's fibbing, those pieces of wood I get from work are actually 6"x6"x24", man Roald I thought we were clear on the "good" fibs and the "bad" fibs...."No Honey, I didn't buy a new airgun" is "good fib", "These are really 1.5" groups" is "bad fib".  Hehe, some people.......JUST KIDDING!!!  Roald is right, they are only about 2.75" square or so, and those are pretty good groups.  Oh yea, btw Roald, ya know that "smooth as butter" HW77?  Wait till you get to shoot my "much smoother than the HW77 BSA Supersport with gas ram".....I think it will pass inspection:)

Huhm, 460 looks super nice too.  This thing is like a CFX with a really, really, really nice trigger, linear recoil, and almost no noise when you cock/load it.  When you shoot it all you hear is "Thwack!", no twang, no shakes, no nothing, just "Twack!" and a quick sharp recoil.  I was shooting pretty consistant dimes at 10 yards offhand with open sights this evening in the yard, I only wish I was a better marksman:)

Hey silo!
Handsome riflesA  I really like that about the Gamos, the hardwood is simple but very nice.  I've never seen a CFX with wood stock.  Where did you get this?  Is that a stock from a 220 that you switched over?  Sorry about the seals gone bad, those groups are frustrating, but at least you seem to have some knowledge of how to do some light duty (maybe heavy duty as well) airgunsmithing to solve the problem.  I am a 30 year gun collector and ameteur gunsmith, but am in a second time around love affair with airguns, and have bLeen nuts over them for about two years now.  Let me know what's up with that neat stock on the CFX ok?  We may be brothers in arms soon, as I have a Hunter elite on the way from Cabelas.  Very excited, they are so neat, and half of the cost of the slick BSA Lightening XL, and RWS shrouded 34 and 350's.  I'll update you how those go when I do a write-up on the reviews page with my other three springers.
God Bless, and safe shooting
