When do you know it's time to stop???
« on: May 08, 2010, 08:12:49 AM »
I was recently reading on another forum and saw a post that interested me.  It was about not "needing" a new airgun.  I never thought that was possible since I've bought (and sold) A LOT of airguns and I (almost) always wanted another.  When I was 11 I got a Daisy 499, it was my first airgun and I shot it a ton, until I shot my cousin's Daisy 922 and realized the horrific stopping power of that gun.  For Christmas when I was 12 I got a Daisy 880 and my 499 soon became "yesterdays news".  I shot the 880 a bunch until I moved and could no longer shoot(inner city, close houses, Mom took the 880 away).  I shot a few powder burners later on in life, mostly in the military, but never really got the "itch" to own one myself.  4 years ago I bought my two oldest sons Red Ryders for Christmas.  I shot the Red Ryder a few times and realized how much I loved air rifles.  I quickly drove off to Cabelas and bought my first air rifle, a Gamo Delta, which I returned the next day and bought an RWS M92 (a.k.a. Cometa 220).  After that I was hooked and my collection quickly grew to around 20 or so airguns, mostly Chinese guns and Gamos.  At some point in there I started buiding myself custom CO2 guns, Crosmans, QB78's, etc..  Then one day I was visiting with my friend Steve Corcoran (the Master stock maker himself) and he let me shoot a PCP....to the Darkside I went.  My list of guns bought and sold gets really long at this point, I would say I've owned 50+ guns now, probably more.  A year or two ago I decided to shed most of my less expensive stuff and to just acquire some "keepers".  I think I've finally gotten to a point where I don't dream every night and day of owning another new one, not that I don't still want more.  Here is the collection I have finally rested on:

One lightweight tack driving PCP (Custom AA S200 .177)
One heavier weight long range plinker (Roald tuned MRod in .22)
One super accurate break barrel (Gene tuned R9 in .177)
One super custom fixxed barrel (self tuned HW97K in Steve C. FT stock)
One tinkerers dream (B40 .177 with self tune)
One fun plinker open sights break barrel (B25 .22 with self tune)
One Benjamin pumper, because everyone should have one (Benji 397)

I would like to have a TX200, but the B40 works for now.  Would also like a vintage match springer of the recoiless type, but I have guns that deliver the same accuracy and have similar fit.  I was going to get rid of the B25 because it really doesn't "fit" in my target shooting arsenal, but then I went and shot it with open sights a couple weeks ago and was so impressed with the accuracy and simplicity I just haven't had reason to get rid of it.  The Benjamin 397 is one I never shoot, mostly because it has some "issues" and I haven't decided if I should fix it, or just sell it off as-is.  Back to the B40, I could replace that one with a TX200, but I would have to sell a few other things to afford it first, and I don't really feel like selling anything.  I guess I have come to a point where I can say the collection is neither too much, nor too little for my needs.  The others are all keepers and shoot better than I do.  When do you know that you have enough?

I don't know about stopping, but  I'm slowing down. I bought 3 this year and passed on 4 guns. Just enjoying what I have.

I still like the vintage springers, I will continue to buy them. Just like anything else, stuff was made better back then.

Nice assortment of guns....BTW.

I will say that I'm trying to have a collection with no more than 12 guns room is a issue and I figure other than looks and caliber 12 is my lucky number like u I wanted to tx200 but if I'm going to spend 600 big ones its going to be on a pcp not a springer knowing that and by luck on some cash and at the right time I picked up howies old 177 cal b40 with a custome maple stock she is a keeper maybe shoots 80% of the tx200 I never shot a tx but I can live with that I do know she is prettier than a stock tx200 minus the checkering so I have one in the stable as a keeper the other keeper my roy weid 2250tx not only is she sweet but roy blessed her with his magic and with a mr shadow custom camo job she is blessed twice she is a keeper another keeper is my rws 350p the first day I saw her I fell in love I'm a sucker for synth stock and I shot her the most out of all my rifles.my tf89 well she is fantastic and last my gamo 890s she is the oldest rifle I own circa 1999 lol gotta keep her gotta keep her lol
keep your eyes on the prize & dont let it crawl away.

I tend to buy guns for a purpose, or because I want to see how they work, or because I need to buy a new gun, or because its pretty, or because everyone else bought one, or because its on sale. Wow I think you have a real problem.

I find it hard to sell my guns.. But I do and sometimes I reget it. I am like Dano as far as haveowend a load of them. Problem being I still have a load of guns.. Guess I am a hoarder... Once I get a gun and work on it til it shoots the way I want it to it is hard to part with them. I still have a few Gamo's left that I may never part with... But I still like buy more guns and play with them... My bigges probem these days is room. I am running out of room....:(

And my short and long list of air guns keeps getting larger... I am addicted and I admit it...
THE ONES I SLEEP WITH: BSA Lightning XL, AA TX-200, AA ProSport, BSA Ultra, HW-97K, Crosman NPSS .177, FX Cyclone, HW-30 Nicle Plated, AA-S200, Crosman Marauder, CZ-634, R-9 DG, Webley/Scott UK Tomahawk, Benji Kantana, Benji Marauder, Benji Discovery.....

Great Collection Dano !

I have followed your exploits for years, and you have had every air gun that I would ever want !!!!

Now I don't know about you, but my HW-50 fills the small void, as does the HW-30 ! Two GREAT light to mid range shooters !!! And their so much fun to shoot !

But as for the rest, I would be as happy as a tick on a dog !

Keep up the good work buddy, after all it's only AirGun Money !!!!

Nice collection. I lik the stock on the one closest to the camera in the 2nd pic.

When to stop? That's a good question. I have a bunch and still want more but want better ones. I figure an mrod in 22 and a trail xl in 22 and I will be done for a while. Thinking bout selling a few to clear out room for the new ones and the fact they never really get shot.

Haha!!!!!  I think you've summed it up perfectly Bill, "it's only airgun money".  I've owned an R7 which is the same animal as an HW30S for the most part, but I have yet to own a HW50.  My R9, which is a big brother of the other two, is the sweetest shooting springer I've owned....., but of course that one has the spirit of Gene inside it...don't get any better than that!!!  I'm a firm believer in anything Weihrauch makes or has ever made, their barrels are like gold.  I've never shot any gun by HW that didn't hit exactly what it was aimed at.  I can hit pretty much anything with my R9 or HW97K that I can hit with my S200 PCP.  The only thing any PCP holds over those guns is the power at a distance, for longer range stuff I use the MRod!

Take care buddy!

I guess to be truthful I'm the reverse of dano, airgun's until I was 10 or11, then powder all the way until I started teaching my grandkid's with a old pellet gun laying around(had to work on it to even get it to shoot, well boy did) & then saw the joy in them & remembered the fun & being able to shoot in back yard anytime you want,so along came a whisper& it whispered in my ear & then found this forum an saw what could be done to them & MY NAME IS JAY & I'M AN ADDICT,so I guess the answer to the question is NEVER ENOUGH,NEVER STOP, at well over 100 powder & counting, I shudder(in joy)at what someday my air collection will be!!!MR GENE I feel your pain, but we can alway's find one more corner, for one more gun,I think? at least until our better half's kick us out & then just think of the space!

The gun closest to the camera in the second photo is my HW97K with a custom stock by Steve Corcoran.  Between that gun and my AA S200 also with Steve Corcoran custom stock they are my "flagship" guns, and were a long time in the making.  When I decide to put something custom together I usually spend a fair amount of time (and money) getting it just right.  Steve is a good friend of mine and also has an eye to make airguns look/feel their best, so I'm always confident when I ask him to build me something it will be better than I expected, everytime!  Oh yea, the guns both shoot like Lamborginis as well, a nice side effect...haha!!!

You know as well as I do, Dan, airguns are like beer.  You don't own them, you just rent them for awhile :-).

I, too, have "owned" a bunch of guns, started with springers, went all PCP for awhile, then recently went back to nothing but springers.  I have just 4 right now, a Gamo CFX, a Diana 34, an R9 GF, and a TX 200 Mk. III, all .177.  Oddly enough, the TX is the least favorite of the four, and I'm already thinking about a replacement :-).  Problem is, the short list doesn't seem to have anything on it!  I'm toying with the idea of a vintage match rifle or a Diana 54, but it's only toying at the moment.  I also have a friend (wink, wink!) who's jonesing for a TX, so I might have to figure out a way to make that work.  We've done it before :-).

My focus is shifting to working on airguns, I just picked up an older Grizzly 12x24 lathe, and I can't wait to get started with it.  I have several projects I want to do on my CFX, after that, I'll probably be looking for beater rifles for practice.  And with that, I have a lathe sitting on a trailer, time to go start setting it up :-)!  Later.

"When do you know that you have enough?"   Well a true addict will never know when he has enough.   So,  is you is or is you ain't a addict?  That is the question.

Good looking shooters.    And you furniture don't look too bad either.
